loudness of my exhaust is unbearable!! WHY???

i bought a warpspeed performance y pipe last october and loved it....great upgrade, however couldnt take the loudness. ive got catback with straight through muffler and the y pipe made the sound unbareable. took the pipe out a month later and it sits in my garage. is there anyway i can make my exhaust quiet but with the performance as well??? maybe some resonators, maybe a muffler that isnt straight through? what do you think??

Get a long glasspack resonator and maybe even a frankencar muffler. Good flow muffler and its a quiet one. Should be where you want to be.

Actually a perforated core resonator would be much better than a glasspack type.

1. make sure there's no leak between ur exhaust components
2. swap your stock cat back
3. go to ur local exhaust shop and have them weld on a resonator on your b-pipe

i believe this is caused by the unequal length in the y section of the two pipes. save up some pennies and order the cattman headers.

if not what about the 5th gen muffler and add a magnaflow resonator 18 inch to the b pipe.

You would achieve much better performance and sound by using the Y and a stock muffler vs using the stock Y and some rice muffler.

I'd get someone to weld the stock muffler or some other type of quiet muffler on and reinstall the Y. You will be much happier with the results.

The reason the performance Y is louder is the stock Y does some noise cancellation by ramming the exhaust into each other (bad for performance). Also the pipes are much thicker and has more sheilding etc....

You can mod the whole exhaust and keep the stock muffler and it will be quiet. the stock muffler will take away the anoying sound and you wont notice a loss in power.

wouldnt that be a little too much airflow for a stock muffler???? ive got 2 1/4 inch piping cat back and a mandrel bent y pipe, how would the stock muffler be able to take that?

Ah no.... You are adding a Y pipe, not a turbo/supercharger.

This may be a stupid question but it's just a thought: Can I go with a 2.5"/3" pipe and still use the stock muffler?

In your case, I wouldn't. Being SC'd, I think you are giving up too much. I'd really start digging for a quiet muffler for your SC'd application. See Iansw dyno for his 3" exhaust. Nice gains.

It's easy just to put on whatever rice muffler out there and be loud. It's 10x harder putting down good hp #s and being quiet at the same time.

That's the hard part, Jeffie....I've read most of the comments on quiet mufflers and its all personal interpretation of what quiet is. Maybe a longer resonator is the answer.

Well off hand, straight though designs are a no-no for quietness. I'll try to dig up an article

Here's one that's decent. Mag is in Europe but gives a decent description of how mufflers are made/sound.
