spark plug recommendations

Well its time for a tune up, i believe this involves spark plugs, pcv valve, fuel and air filter. If i forgot anything please add. I have no idea what a pcv valve is. I also have no idea what spark plugs to use with this engine, should i just go OEM again? LEt me know your input and experiences.

I put BKR5E-11's in my Dad's 2000 SE 5spd and it got rid of a hesitation at 3300 and 3600rpm

I also use them in my car and have put them in numerous other maximas with good results

PCV stands for positive crankcase ventilation valve, its located in the rear vavle cover just behind the throttle body. Just changed mine today along with fuel filter, air filter, oil change, and cleaning the throttle body. Planning to do my spark plugs in next day or 2 using bkr5e-11, those are NGK copper plugs, same as the OEM but OEM are platinum plugs.

Baby, just go with the ones that these guys said. You can get them at O'Reilly Auto Parts but you have to ask them by the BKR5E-11, not NGK coppers. They will give you ones with a colder spark and you don't want those.

Changing you spark plugs is simple. Any 12 year old can do it with the right tools. Here is the instruction for it.

I only used a rag when cleaning mine, no brush. Using throttle body cleaner loosened stuff up to make it clean nice and easy, may have been able to do it a bit faster with brush but not sure. Used the cleaner fairly liberally then used rag to wipe gunk out, repeated multiple times till it was clean to my liking. May have already checked it out but if not there is a write up along with many other DIY things at http://www.motorvate.ca/mvp.php/517

Also meant to mention this in regards to your other question, the BKR5E-11 are the V power plugs and should be available at many auto parts stores I am sure, I got mine at a Schucks, just stop at any auto parts store and ask for NGK plugs with that #, worse things then can do is try and get you to buy something else if they dont have them and you know just not to go back there

I still have the original plugs. Why are people using NGK copper plugs rather than the NGK platinum plugs. I know they are cheaper but they don't last as long, do they? Is it because people prefer to change their plugs sooner than 60,000 miles and copper plugs are more cost effective for that purpose? I suspect it is not performance related.

The reason is because copper is a better conductor and produces a better spark. however since its low boiling point, and higher reactivity than pt, they will need to be replaced more regularly.

No man they're raping you... Just ask for plugs for a 97 altima, they're the BKR5E-11's, NGK# 6953. You should be able to get them for well under $2 each. Get the coppers, you dont need platinums. The only difference is you change the coppers at 30K instead of 60K with the platinums.. big deal.. your paying $72 for the platinums and $12 for the coppers... add it up.

The only other thing you might wanna do is an oil change while your there.

I currently have over 3000 miles on the set of 6-Denso's Iridium plugs. I think they are great! The car idles & pulls smoothly...just like new.

I dont know Ant, it was hard enough to find them. If you know where i can find them cheaper in BK, i dont mind, i mean theres not much more to save of $2.25. What year altime do these come on? Any big retailers sell them? I just found them at some accessories shop.

Try Strauss on Pennsylvania a little past Linden Blvd and ask for NGK plugs for a 97 Altima. Just make sure you ask for 6. Dont go to AutoZone on Flatlands and Pennsylvania... they dont carry NGK. Just try any major retailer, they're not any kind of special plug.. just normal copper plugs.

Well thanks to ANT, i found them even cheaper. $1.59 at Strauss and $1.69 at PepBoys, however what these people told me on the phone contradicts what TreeFarm mentioned. Both stores told me that BKR5E-11 (also NGK #6953) are regular single tip and TreeFarm said that these are V power. I dont know cause i havent seen them yet but im going to go check it out. So before i buy something i dont need, are these supposed to be V power or single tip?

So they should have 2 tips right? If anyone could check the box and tell me if it matches BKR5E-11 and also matches #6953

Ok, I went to the accessories shop and saw the plug. It says "V-POWER" on it but i opened it and its a single tip. Doesnt V mean a V looking tip with 2 ends?? Beats me.

V Power means the electrode has a V shaped groove in it, not 2 tips.

i put these in today, also in the midst of chaning air filter so i left it out, this biotch rips like crazy and it has a nice roar. Now i want an intake because it will give me the same response without the danger of something flying into the TB. Place Racing or Injen??

only thing about changing spark plugs (since i've done it couple of weeks ago) is that the back coils are a pain to get to, especially the middle one. but it's not impossible, just do things slowly.

i put in ngk coppers after going back to the auto store and giving them back their bosch +4s. oh yeah, make sure you have an extender since the spark plugs are down there in the engine. make sure to torque them to their specifications.

my infiniti i30 has MUCH better gas mileage, idles faster, accelerates smoother and stronger after replacement. good luck and have fun.

[PC Valve allows blowby gases in the engine to be pulled into intake manifold thereby reducing chances of engine oil leaks,it also reduces pollution. For plugs I would go with the NGK OEMS. There has been sets of 8 plugs on eBay going for about $36 for the 8 plugs plus $5 shipping.

the ones that are on ebay are the iridium ix's right? i would just go ngk coppers... you do it once, you get used to it.

i've never worked on a car previous and replacing spark plugs was my first DIY. just take it slow and make sure you get everything you need.

specifications for spark plugs? are you talking about the gap? if you are, plugs should be gapped to 0.044mm
