Yes; if you get rear-ended, you want your whole body to get jolted equally, instead of leaving your head flailing around (whiplash). Volvo has taken the concept a step further by making a headrest that follows your head to prevent it from whipping back. The real beauty of it is that it's purely mechanical - no sensors, no computers.

I believe the 5th gen has something similar. The head rest moves forward to meet your head if you're rear-ended. Also all mechanical.

Just me 2 cents

I keep my head restraints in the fully extended position.

http://www.msnbc.com/news/145991.asp
MSNBC reported on the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's crash test of a 1998 Maxima, saying this of the head restraint: "In the down position, head restraint geometry is poor in relation to an average-size male. At full vertical adjustment of the restraints, the geometry is acceptable."

two notches for me too. i put the passenger side one up one notch (usually no one adjusts it) so that it doesnt look funny. i read somewhere that the height of the headrest should be such that the top of the headrest is at the same height as the top of the driver's ear.

now if they would tilt like the ones in my 1990 maxima......

I've read the same in the past ...

The top of the headrest should be at the same height as the top of the seat occupant's ear.

I also believe that one should drive with the head rest up, parallel to the driver's ear. This is to prevent any "whiplash" or effects from being read ended and our neck/head being whipped forward then back. Just my .02 cents. Later all

For safety, headrest is up of course. Mines up about two notches. Speaking of leaning back against the headrest, I would use it to lean against when I'm really tired and waiting at a light. And even when I'm tired, only in a full moon, in which I would use it. I wonder how many people use the headrest to lean against frequently?

the headrest is too far back to be constantly leaning on it. i really liked the tiltable ones that came in my old 1990 maxima, i could tip them forward, just so that they touch the back of my head while i was in the "upright" driving position, that way its easy to know that i'm not leaning too far forward....

i see too many people that lean too far forward, like theyre trying to climb over the steering wheel.... would be bad if the air bag launched them back into the seat at 200mph(?) anyone know which way the air bag comes out? somethings going to get whacked by the black plastic cover....
