Resetting ECU- what does it do?

I have seen in several places (including here) people talk about resetting their ECUs. I have not been able to find an answer to why this is done,though..
Can someone elaborate?

1. To get rid of the check engine light after you fixed the problem.

2. Reset the factory memory so it will learn the new mods quicker.
