wheels turn while car in gear

Noticed when I jacked the car from the member in the center front, so the front wheels were both off the ground, the wheels easily turned while the car was in 1st or R. Thought the wheels would lock in that case?

I tried putting the jack stands where the diagram on this forum said to--what a no-no. The channel cannot handle the weight of the vehicle, and gets crushed, I think an adapter is supposed to be used with the stand. Dang! If the car were brand-new I would be ****ed. So I just kept the car jacked with the jack instead. Sometimes the advice here must be taken with a grain of salt.

Sorry bout that Frank. That's why I really wish that if people don't have first hand knowledge or understanding of things they would just keep their damned mouths shut. Stop repeating "hearsay", and stop blurting things out without even thinking about it. Unfortunately these days on these forums you have to assume that the person giving you "advice" doesn't have a damned clue, so be sure to think through things for yourself first.

Hopefully we can get some sort of a "wiseman" program setup here eventually so that people know who to listen to and who not to.

If you turned the left wheel forward did the right wheel roll backward? The ring gear couldn't turn since the pinion was locked in place via the transmission being in gear. But the axles are connected to the ring gear carrier by a set of gears that turn independant of the carrier. If you could grab both front wheels at the same time and try to roll them forward together or backward together they wouldn't budge. This also means that there is no engine braking when one front wheel is off or off the ground. (Or sliding in gravel...)
