Getting 26 MPG in mixed commuter traffic...crazy?
Over the last 5000 miles I have been getting 25-26 MPG in mixed commuter traffic. I have a 23 mile commute each way, and it takes about an hour each way, to give you an idea of what the traffic is like. I hit 50-60 mph a few times each way, if I am lucky, but abotu 50% of the drive is highway gridlock (DC Metro commute) and a lot of it is in-town stop and go through areas with traffic lights.
Do I have a factory freak as far as MPG? Weird thing is that I have a CEL for evap and emissions problems...don't those usually HURT gas mileage?

I use to get 29.5 mpg with 40% highway, and 60% city driving....this was back when my commute was about 25 miles one way, and I had the original tranny that had a taller 5th gear. Now it's 100% city driving, and my mileage has fallen to like 18-21mpg...with a commute of 3 miles one way.
BTW, my car is a 2nd gen. :P

Seriously, my commute has several significant hills, and I try to drive it as moderately as possible. I have to get on it to merge, pass, and get up to speed, and I do run it up to 60-70% throttle fairly often. I don't really hit WOT more than once a week.

Well, keep paying for your pads, I'll just keep exchanging mine for free. They don't squeak so i dont see the point in not using them....

How long have you owned the car Phenyriv1? You talk about your fuel economy for the last 5,000 miles. What was it like before then and what have you done to it in the interim? I am somewhat dubious that you are getting that kind of mileage on a 23 mile commute where you only average 23 mpg. I would expect your mileage to be more like 19 mpg at the best. Either the commute is longer than 23 miles or you are going faster than you state.
As a professional accountant I would like to audit your calculations, lol!

I get 27-29 mpg hwy, 22 mpg in straight 100% city, and 25-26 mixed. Stock 99 5spd with 92k miles and nothing but 93 octane fuel. My commute to work is 5 miles one way and I drive like a granny, lol.
I run my tires at 36 psi which helps some. I could be getting better mileage, though. My Dunlop SP Sport A2's are not the best as far as rolling resistance. If I put on some tires with much better rolling resistance performance (like Michelin Energys) I could get another 1-2 mpg all around I bet. Of course, I'd be trading off handling for better mileage.

My last tank was only a partial tank, but it took 8.69 gallons and I had 247 on the tripometer. Ths was from pump-cutoff to pump-cutoff, meaning that when I fuel up, I always fill it all of the way up, reset my tripometer, and drive until the next fillup. At that point, I divide the tripometer mileage by the amount of fuel that it takes to reach the cutoff point.
My mileage was about 19-21 when I had an auto, but with the 5MT it is a steady 25-26. I have touched almost 30 mpg on long sustained highway runs over flat. Even in the mountains through western MD and WV I recorded 28 mpg on a 517 mile trip.
When I say that it takes an hour each way, part of that (a good portion, actually) is spent stopped in highway gridlock. I usually inch along for the first 12 miles, then I get up to 35-45 for about 5 miles (though there are traffic lights every 3/4 mile to 1 mile), and the remainder of the trip (6 miles) is sometimes spent at 50-60 mph, though many days it is stop & go for 2-3 of those last 6 miles.

you guys are insane..... i have almost the same commute as phenryiv1 25 mile trip to work and it takes me about an hour each day. My driving is 90% stop and go though on the highway. If i get 20 MPG i feel good about it.... right around 300-320 miles per tank.

Well thats sensational mileage then, phenyriv1! I don't use my car for commuting anymore, but when I did (11 miles each way, no highway), I would only get about 18.5 to 19 mpg (US equivalent), with a 5-speed and not get over 40 mph. Not gridlock but lights. With a longer commute obviously the car is warmed up for that much longer. On a decent highway trip I can consistenly get 28 mpg or better, with my all-time best being almost 31 mpg. That was going from Blaine, Washington round trip over the Southern Cascade/Northern Cascade loop which entailed a fair amount of climbing but the round-trip was done at much less than freeway speeds which made a difference.

I just took another roundtrip from Chicago to Pittsburgh and averaged 30mpg (calculated) on FlyingJ 93 octain gas on the way there at 75mph or so drving by myself.
On the way back, got some Sunuco 93 and driving loaded with crap in the trunk/back seat, about 250lb worth i got about 27mpg at 70mph.
It is a 6sp manual
