I would like to bypass the antitheft chip in the key of my 99 SE maxima for two reasons:
1. remote start capable.
2. I am cheap. nissan dealer wants $100 dollars for another key.

Thanks for your advice.

funny!..

I went and got a duplicate key for $1.50 and tried using it with my original key next to it. (like the alarm installers tell you they would do it for remote start). And surprise surprise. having the original key next to the duplicate does not work.

Please post something i can use please. Thanks.

I might be way off base here, but I woulud assume that the chip in the key completes some sort of circuit. Meaning, that a small charge is sent through the key that checks for the antitheft chip. If this is the case (I doubt it, but it kinda makes sense) then it would stand to reason that hard wiring this chip into the ignition would permanently(sp) complete this circuit and allow for remore start. This is just a non-electrical engineer's theory and is probably wrong, but hey what do you expect from a laymen?

In what year model Maxima did Nissan begin to put chips into their keys to prevent theft? I know for sure that my 1996 Maxima does not have this feature unless the key-making abilities of the machine at Home Depot are that outstanding.

Thanks in advance,
Jeff

chips started in 99.. anyway..

if your installer is good enough he can do the remote start for your car.. a shop near me i have seen them do it for 99 accords and up and the new a6's so you need to shop for another installer..

i have the remote start on my 99. basically all they did was stick the key with the chip under the steering column and then the remote start worked fine. there's a $50 "kit" you have to buy to put the key inside of and you put the whole box under the steering colum. then you have to get a duplicate key made that doesn't have the chip inside because for some reason, the it confuses the computer when you have two keys with chips next to each other. it'll start fine sometimes but then other times it will start and then die right away. so get the copy of the key without the chip and you'll be fine.

im not sure how the key works, but i was under the assumption that it had to be within a certain radius of whatever was detecting the chip, a friends lexus has the key magnatized to the steering column ... as for it not liking 2 keys with chips, my auto start has no problems with it. i have a key in some transmitter under the steering column and have copy with chip that i put into the ignition

im thinking that when u hit the auto start button on the remote, the brain sends a signal to the thing with the key under the steering column to send the signal to whatever receives the signal from the key ...
but then again we could all be wrong and the chip could just work thru proximity ... i dunno, but i got a box with a chipped key under my steering column and have 2 other keys with chips too and ive had no problems
hope this helps

Regards to your remote problem

Did the dealer when you bought your new key reprogram
your old and new key at the same time?if not the one key will not work, they must both be done at the same time. The new key is then taped to the alarm unit.

Good luck!!

If you don't mind being without the chip security, you can remove the chip from your key and install the chip in your car to complete the circuit. The remote start works, but as I mentioned before, you lose that extra security where you have to have to key to start the car. But then again, if someone is going through that much trouble to get your car, you're not going to be able to stop them anyway. =)
