Blew my motor while the forums were down
Missed 4th and went into 2nd at 105mph. Probably hit 10K rpm's or so. New motor has already arrived. Just thought I would share Hope things went better for you guys during this vacation.

Engine is messed up bad. This is a little beyond my automotive knowledge but I must have bent a valve or something. Car runs and idles like crap. Whole engine shakes back and forth.
It's now in a parking lot, gonna have it towed into my shop in the morning. Nothing I can really do but get it fixed.
Sucks big time. It was a year ago this month my tranny went out on me. Good thing used VQ30's can be had for cheap.
Looks like any mod plans are out the window for a while. I am really glad I had not orderd the cattman headers yet. I was going to do that this week. That money will come in handy now."
That's why....

And yes, I did this in a school zone while handicaped kids were crossing the street at 3 in the afternoon.

Got to do someting with my old motor. Me and Neal were talking about building it for his car. Whatever I do, it's not like it's gonna be real soon. But I have an extra motor to play with and I don't think it's mesed up all that bad. Probably just screwed up the valve train.

oh damn man, that sucks ****. at least our engines are damn cheap now. how much do you think it will cost to have the new engine dropped in? how much did you pay for the engine? mileage? good luck man.

Good answer!
Sorry to hear that... Hopefully you got yourself a nice low mileage VQ you can stuff in there.

already got the motor. A 97 max motor with 74k miles, when I got the car it had 79K miles. $400 for the motor which included a 1yr warrenty on the engine and labor. So if something happens to this one, like the compression not up to snuf,f then they will get me a new motor and pay the labor to have it pulled and the new one installed.
I am getting the install done at the shop I work at, which I pay $25 an hour labor and it's a 15hr job. So the whole thing is gonna be about $800. Not too bad.

if you went from 3rd to 2nd at redline or close to it your motor went far higher than 7500 rpm, even if the tach did not reflect it. the tach cannot react instantly to what the rpm is. say you were at 90mph and nailed 2nd instead of 4th, that's about 9000rpm right there (i could do the calculations if I wanted to but I'm not in the mood right now.)

i've accidentally mis shifted into second gear from 3rd before. kinda made me cringe. thats the last time that happened though. hope they get the new motor in soon and everything works out. good luck.

dam, doing 105 and at the peak of 3rd then shifting into second?! the car must have lunged you forward :wow:
its amazing how a 2 second small stupid little mistake can account for 800 dollars .
I know you'll be back

So, what happened to Mike's motor?
Reviving this dead thread for diagnosis. For those who don't know, about four months ago Mike offered up his dead motor for free to anyone who would come pick it up. I decided it wouldn't hurt to have an extra setup around even if it was really FUBAR'ed.(Call it a curse because I now have three VQ's at my house.) At least I can learn from taking it apart. I got it apart about two months ago but haven't taken pics yet.
My guess is that the valves floated and the pistons decided to have tea with them. On the top of every piston there are little dents where the exhaust valves met up. At first inspection of the valves everything looks alright except for little areas where they hit. The carbon on those areas is gone but the valves don't look bent. But they must be bent enough judging from the idle troubles it was having. The condition of the cylinder walls on cyl 1 make me think the rings got a bit messed or maybe they were like that before the incident.
Basically the pics from every piston are the same. If you wanna see the rest check my homepage.
Now maybe this is a good time to ask where one would get the correct socket to remove the main cap and rod end bolts.
