I am pretty sure this has been discussed here many times, but since search is not working...
I am mainly intrested in 4th(95-99) and 5th(2000+) Gen Maximas:
4th Gen Common Problems:
--------------------------
- Ignition coil
- weak transmission?
5th Gen Common Problems:
--------------------------
- Rust (usually on back fender)
- Gear leather boot will fall off quick?

There are way too many to list, so I am gonna just ramble off as many as I can think of. I just drive it because it gets me from A to B....and am the original owner.
Weak tranny? Not sure my car has 94k never needed anything there yet
EVAP at 50-70k, $400+ job at dealership
Shaking of front end starting in high 50k range (after new tires, balance, align, upon inspection ZERO play on any components so who knows why incl. wheel bearings, inn/out tie rods, CV, ball joints)
side air bag modules cause lamp to flash
oil leak from pressure sender
gear oil leak from o-ring 5-spd reverse switch
blower fan is noisy starting after 2 yrs
parking brake cable need repl. after 50k or so
auto climate changes when bumps hit in road
I do have the problem with the gearshift know wearing out, the layers are trying to peel off and the thread is coming apart
My car had rust under the bumper from 0 miles because it's just untreated under the cover--I don't feel that bad though, here it is 2004 and I saw the same cr** under the Pathfinder Armada.
Some of the above are annoying, some are critical, all are expensive out of warranty
One thing I think is fantastic on the Maxima are the brake components--I have replaced pads with OEM at all corners and still have the original rotors, NO pulsation whatsoever, no squeals, takes less than 20 minutes to do an axle.

I think what is meant by the weak tranny is the fact that on some, and I said Some, 5 speeds are known to have bearing and syncro failures between 60K and 150K miles. My 1st gear bearing went bad at 117K miles and so I'm having to get another tranny installed or you can rebuild them. I do know that some automatics have tranny problems as well (ask desertmax). But that's what I believe what is meant by "weak" tranny.

Why is it even top jap companies have weak/fragile transmissions? Honda also has trasmissions issues (remember extending the warrenty on trans. on 2000+) ....
Is Toyota in the same boat or they have issues lurking with trasnmissions too?

I bought my '96 maxima from the original owner with 116,000 miles on it. The guy said he changed the oil and nothing else. I now have 130,000+ miles on it and have replaced a CV joint boot, Knock sensor and rear hub. It could use the clutch and rear struts replaced I will likely do that soon. NO oil leaks.
All in all maxima's are good cars but definately listen to see if the tranny growls or is hard to shift when test driving (if looking for a 5 speed). The hub going bad in my max kind of sounded like the exhaust rattling. Only way to know if the knock sensor is bad is to hook a OBDII code reader to the car.

The number one common problem throughout all maxima years and forums spanning this great community?
1. People not reading and then saying search doesn't work when they don't want to donate.
The judge never came, the jury ran away, the prosecution went on a lunch break.. defense never got their summon.

Here is a list of what I had to replace with my Maxima after I bought it used with 52k miles.
O2 Sensor (not sure if front or rear): Replaced at dealer, after driving off the lot about 10 miles.
Driver Side Wheel bearings and hub: 140k miles
Starter: 120k
Both Driver and Passenger Side axles: 140k miles from www.raxles.com (I decided to replaced both instead of just my driver side, since it was ripped and grease was gone).
Knock Sensor: 185k (Thanks Joe)
Now at 190k+ miles and running fine. Mostly wear and tear items. Some of the issues people have problems here are not common, just individual basis.

Japanese cars are not the only ones who have weak/fragile transmissions.
Chryslers & Dodge's have crap for Trannys as well. I think it's just new cars in general that are built like crap no matter if it's japanese or domestic. I do gotta say that Domestics are being built better than they were a few years ago. They are starting to last as long as imports now.
