Okay, I think I screwed up. I didn't check my front brake pads and I apparently ran them down pretty bad. I may have damaged my front rotors. If thats the case I would like to know if powerstop makes slotted rotors for the max. I don't want cross drilled. Just slotted. Anyone have it?

EBC Green Owners Warning:
My pads only lasted about 20k miles. I'm not a crazy brake rider either. But I do live in the city. The pads are still gripping great even though they are almost gone. Thats the good thing.. =) But these pads don't seem very long wear to me. They didn't last much longer than my stock pads. Correction, they definately didn't last longer than the stock pads. When I removed the stock pads. There was still about 1/4 pad left. But since I got the EBCs, I guess I have been braking harder and later just for fun.. Oh well. Gotta pay to play. Now it looks like I have to pay for new rotors.. =( Hopefully thats not the case though. Car is at mechanic now. =) I was planning on installing my new set of brakes myself (metal-lux/Axxis). But I won't have time this week. So I have to be a wimp and have some gease monkey install them. And worry about if he did it right or not. Oh wells.. Pay to play.. =P

My post lamenting the EBCs:

http://forums.maxima.org/showthread....ht=unfortunate

I did notice a decent amount of wear (a little over 1/8 of the pad) after changing them in just 3 months.......

I switched back to Axxis Metalmasters. FYI, 3rd gen and 4th gen pads fit the same in the front (I've installed them on my 94 and 99), so here's the part number for the pads:

Front Brake Rotor: JBR-505 $45 @carparts.com

Front Brake Pads:
Metalmaster: 23-430-01 $47 (Recommended)
Metal-LU: 24-430-01 $26
Porterfield uses 430 Series

Rear Brake Rotor: JBR-752 $43 @carparts.com

Rear Brake Pads:
Metalmaster: 23-540-01 $46 (Recommended)
Metal-LU: 24-540-01 $27
Porterfield uses 540 Series

The rotors are Brembo blanks. I've used the Powerstop rotors, and didn't like them.

Their numbers are (on carparts.com):

505 PSL $90.08

505 PSR $90.08

I have powerslot drilled on the front with EBC greens. Thanks for the warning on the pads. I will add you to the growing list of reasons to switch to metal masters when these wear out. Anyway, I got my parts at www.brakeco.com ~$90 a piece for rotors and ~$75 for EBC greens.

Re: Yep.....

I may go with the brembo rotors if I have to change them. What didn't you like about the powerstop rotors? As for the pads. I already got the Autospecialty Metal-Lux/Axxis Metal Master combo. Hopefully the shop installs them correctly and I won't get any annoying squealing. Thanks for the info.

Whoa! Dude, why didn't you just buy it straight from EBC? I got the Greens for 57 dollars. Direct from EBC. I don't want to go with drilled because I don't want to deal with rotor warp or cracking. It snows and gets cold where I am.

As for the stillen slotted. 165 for the front pair? Not a bad price.

Re: Re: Yep.....

[QUOTE]What didn't you like about the powerstop rotors?

My experience with them was premature warpage after 12k or so......REALLY made me upset. I've heard other grumblings about "Powerstop" in general........If you really want slotted, it may be wise to go Stillen since they use Brembo rotors (while Powerstop does not).......

As for the pads. I already got the Autospecialty Metal-Lux/Axxis Metal Master combo.

Yeah, for some reason no one claims that the 430 series pad will actually fit on 4th gens......but 4th gens and 3rd gens use the same calipers and rotors. The only difference is 4th gen pads are 1mm or so thicker than 3rd gen pads. True "Metalmasters" are only available in the 430 series and not in the 653 series where the Metal-Lux version is....I still don't know the 'real' differences between Metalmasters and Metal-Lux pads, so I'm pretty sure they'll serve you well.....

EBCs and Powerslot

I just purchased Powerslot rotors and Axxis Metalmasters from my friend who owns a parts business. he said that EBC Greens would not be a good idea for me, as they require a VERY precise break in, otherwise you will eat through them like a hot knife through butter. As far as how i like my Powerslots and Axxis.... i dont know yet because they havent arrived. None of his distributors had Maxima Powerslot in stock, so its taken a while. if they come today it will be 2 weeks since the day i ordered them. I hope the come today, because my brakes are in terrible shape.

430s fit fine in the front of 4th gen Maximas. I've sold these over the last few months. The thickness is negligible.

Are you guys 100% positive that the Stillen rotors are Brembo blanks for the Maxima? I've checked to see what's available for the 4th gen Max Brembo OE rotors and it shows up as N/A in the system. I know Stillen usually uses Brembo blanks on the Z32 rotors and Brembo OE rotors are available for the Z32, but if Brembo doesn't have anything for the 4th gen Max I don't see how Stillen is using Brembo blanks.

JBR-505, which are Brembo blanks and are used in both 3rd gens and 4th gens.

AT THE TIME (who knows now), Stillen used Brembos for their Cross-Drilled Rotors when I bought them 3 or 4 years ago...

But it's possible they've changed.....

i too have heard that stillen uses brembo blanks. is there any way to tell?

for those of you who have experience with sloted rotors..... how much more quickly do the pads wear out because of the slots in the rotor?

i have had the opportunity to do a few hard stops with the slotted rotors and metal matrix pads. i have to say that this setup definitely gives the brakes a better feel; i dont feel any decrease in braking effectiveness at the end of the braking.....

did you guys/gals notice that the slot doesnt go across the full face of the pads? the outermost 1/4 inch is not in the slot sweep path......

Well...

i too have heard that stillen uses brembo blanks. is there any way to tell?

Yes. On the outside edge of the rotor you should see "Brembo" engraved as well as a "Min. Thickness xx.xx" engraved note as well. Sometimes that's on the rotor hub.....

for those of you who have experience with sloted rotors..... how much more quickly do the pads wear out because of the slots in the rotor?

Having had all 3 types, my experience is:

Cross-drilled/slotted: fastest
Slotted: Faster
Blank: Normal

i have had the opportunity to do a few hard stops with the slotted rotors and metal matrix pads. i have to say that this setup definitely gives the brakes a better feel;

Yep. True.

i dont recall seeing the "brembo" label, but i did see the "min thickness" thing, printed (dot-matrix style) on the edge of the rotor.....

also, can you feel the slots as they run across the pad? im not sure if its because i am thinking about it, but when i do moderate braking, i can feel the brake pedal "humming" (very light vibration that i can feel) like the slots are running across the pad. i dont think it it a negative feeling, just something extra to tell you what the brakes are doing.....
