1)Ignition Signal Circuit
2) Knock Sensor
3) Cylinder 1 Misfire (Yikes!)

Umm, what's the next step? I just had my timing replaced and my starter too. Could it just be reacting to the new stuff and it'll get better? As you can tell, I'm not exactly a mechanic. Thanks. Oh, and some symptons are that it idles way too low (750 RPM) and is really really shaky at idle in R or D.

this sounds sort of like either a bad spark plug (if you're lucky) or a bad coil pack (the spark plug wire/ignition coil that goes to your #1 cylinder). The spark plug and the coil pack should be replaced to see if that helps.

If you've had your 'timing' replaced, I assume that means timing chain. The mechanic who did that (or claimed to) needs to be smacked, as the timing chain should not be replaced on these engines unless its required. Only pre-95 Maximas with the VG30E engine need timing belt replacements every 60k. The starter problem is unrelated, and is typical of early 4th generation Maximas.

As for the "too low" idle, 750 is about right. Actually, most maxes idle lower than that (600 to 650), which has an irritating shake. Adjusting idle speed will resolve that.

You may want to consider moving this post to the 4th Generation forum as you'll probably get a few more responses since more people are likely to have encountered this issue.

Good luck!

Year and type of Maxima please. I'm assuming that you have a third gen, but then again...

it's a '95 GXE auto. i should smack him up. he's my dad's mechanic and told my pops that i need a new starter (which i did) but didn't know about the timing chain. the cylinder 1 misfire code turned off so i think that is all good. now i just have to worry about the knock sensor and the ignition signal circut. and i'm having the idle turn up tonight. thanks for any help.
