Mine are shot and I'm wondering if there are better alternatives to the dealers rather costly replacements.

Of course there are !!!!!!!! I just bought Bosch replacements !!! The tri-wipe design...works great
I think the Maxima uses 18" wiper for both....I paid
about $9.00 for each...there complete units...take off the
old ones and install the new ones

 

I got some at Pep boys about a year and a half ago. They work better than stock, I think. I don't remember the brand, though.

 

wiper blades are very good--I would say better than the stock ones. They are $8 or so here at autobarn. For the 4 generation max--the driver side takes the 21 inch and the passenger side takes the 20 inch.
try 'em...they are good. And wiper blades are one of those things that need to be change when they streak...and that is about 6-9 months depending on the climate.
