MPG Issues...what's my problem?

I have a 2000 Auto SE with 71k on it. i didnt get much of a response in the 5th gen forum so i hope more people can help me out. I run chevron premium all the time, run mobil 1, have tires at around 40psi, clean k&n air filter, and have done seafoam in intake manifold and gas tank, and plugs were replaced at 63k. I always get between 15-18mpg since i bought it in March of last year. My driving style is normal as well. I drive about 60/40 highway/city. Why am i getting such bad mpg? Has anyone else had any similar issues with this?

1) Check for a bad knock sensor
2) Replace the o2 sensors
3) MAF could be off as well

Define "normal" as your driving style......

Not aggressive driving style...i do not floor it and dont drive above 75mph....and i do not run the a/c at all during the winter here. Have not had any codes for the above mentioned items...how could i check to see if there is a problem with them without getting a code? Car always seems to drive great too.

my max just turned in 25.6mpg this last tank which consisted mostly of highway driving to the poconos. mileage is a little bit low for me as i usually have no problem reaching that figure even in city driving. how is everyone doing during the cold winter on the east coast? the oxygenated gasoline probably isn't helping mileage either.

Are you properly calculating your MPG?

Why are you running 40 psi? Do you notice wear to the center of the tires and not the sidewalls? I would say that overinflating the tires is not gonna improve the mpgs, just cause premature wear (uneven).

18 mpg is not the end of the world, are you sure you're mostly highway? If mostly city, 20-21 is about right.

I suggest you take your car on a highway trip of 200 miles, try to keep it around 70-73 mph and then see what your mpgs were. If you don't get at least 26 you do have some sort of issue. For experiment's sake, take that K&N out and put in a brand-new factory filter. Not saying that you did, but overoiled K&N's rob the car of airflow. A brand-new factory has better airflow than a cleaned and reoiled K&N, says right on the K&N box......

I bought a K&N air filter last June and my gas mileage has improved since then. I have done nothing else to the car to affect its performance. I don't buy the above comment about K&N filters.

In response to what "FrankFontaine" said...i run 40psi b/c i like the ride when the tires are filled up a little more than the factory recommendations...and a lot of people on the org run their tires higher. They can be filled as high as like 55psi. Also my K&N is not overoiled..i took great care in not overoiling it to avoid MAF sensor problems. I have also driven on a 300 mile road trip where i got better gas mileage but after i got off the highway and drove around at 35-40 mph my mpg plummeted so when i filled up 100 miles later my mpg was right at 19. and when i was off the highway i was not slamming on the brakes and didnt have the a/c on. After i switched from the Nissan Filter to k&n it went up 1 mpg to 18...and i drive at least 175-200 miles on the highway and about 90-100 in the city

K&N claims a new K&N panel achieves 441 cfm, and that a new factory filter does 319. After cleaning and reoiling, even K&N doesn't claim 319. Also, they say that it must be replaced after 25 cleanings. I doubt a K&N can go 50k without cleaning, that defys common sense. And yes, I have the K&N panel, because the forum back in 1998 had a grid that said 2-5 HP increase with it. yeah, right!

Hey, everyone is free to do what they think they should to achieve the mpg they want. Understanding addition, subtraction, and division is a good place to start!

Good to know, Frank Fontaine. I routinely get 28 MPG on the highway and have had as high as 30 two or three times. Since I only put about 5,000 or 6,000 miles a year on the car I won't worry about cleaning it for awhile. Coupled with my Budget Y-pipe I notice a performance improvement. Good Canadian gas doesn't hurt either, lol!
