DIY brake job w/ABS question

DIY brake job w/ABS question

Do you have to disconnect the battery if you ahve ABS ?

Not to change the brake pads. For bleeding the brake system, you have to either disconnect the battery ground cable or the ABS actuator connectors.

hmmm...I have never done that.

If the car is off, how does the computer know you bled the brakes?

It's in the FSM and has been for years. I have owned 3 Maxes with ABS and every FSM stated the same procedure for brake bleeding.

didnt do it either for my 4th gen, my abs light has always been on from day one so i didnt even think twice about it. but I've heard from others ( bimmer forums) the same thing, for bleeding the Battery shoudl be disconnected.

with some Dodge trucks with ABS they need to use the scanner at the dealership to bleed the ABS brakes

I've read everywhere to discon abs actuators when bleeding brakes. When changing pads/rotors, no need.
