Question about Identifying engine

So I bout a 3rd gen ( 92 max ) for about $350...125k miles with a small oil pan leak, bad clutch, bad alternator and a small hole in the radiator..fixed everything within 2 days and its running great now.
Now the owner said it has a 97 engine in it...he swapped it in..I dont know if he's lying or not, because dont 3rd gen come with dohc also?

The car has the 145 white speedo, how can I identify the engine if its 4th or 3rd gen? reason why I asked is because I want to buy an LSD tranny and dont want to run into no problems.

Does your engine look like this? If so, it is a VE30DE, the stock engine.

I think he's lying, cuz if he did put the 97 engine in it, he would have to change out the whole ECU. Additionally, a car on the speedo with 125k miles on it, the VE30DE engine don't crapped out at that kind of miles, cuz I have a friend who works for me she has a 94 Maxima with 174k miles and it's the original engine which I believe it since they are the strongest V-6 Nissan engine I've heard.
