I was just wondering if there was any other way avoiding cops...well, i know theres a radar dectector, and detects the radar when the cop is checkin ur speed...what about laser jammers??? OR, is their a device in which it detects cops only??, like detects the cop car??? i checked out the Valentine One detector, and its 400 bucks...whats so special about it?? i mean it detectors in front of u, beside u, and in back of u...what about those 360 degree radar detectors??? r there any other illegal devices which helps u avoid cops???..list all the devices that are available...

Those jammers are useless really. I know a few people said they got snagged with them. I would defintely look into the more MODERN, more features Passport 8500. It is rated better than the V1 period. The V1 only has directional arrows that tell you were the cop is and that is the ONLY difference between it and the passport. Also the V1 does not detect near as good as the passport, plus its bigger, has tons of false alerts. I don't recommend it.

Yep... there is a device that can detect cop cars. They're called... ready for this?

Special device - very expensive - "BRAIN", highest percentage success.

Don't just rely on the detectors although they are good to have. I have a Whistler and it's been good in picking up radars a 1 mile away. The best way to avoid tickets is to know where the cops are: http://www.speedtrap.com/

i find

I find my V1 is helpful, it has definitely helped me. But as Russ said, the newer Passport seems to be doing better on the reviews.

AND the V1 falses like hell -- but I'm not positive that's an engineering and/or quality issue. I don't know enough about the science of it, but I imagine it's harder and harder for engineers to distinguish between genuine police radar and other things like security systems, motion detectors, and the like, especially if they're on the same frequency.

For me, the best defense is good, smart, strategic driving. Use your eyes, your brain, and use the radar detector as one tool of many. Don't just blindly rely on it -- because you WILL get busted. With instant-on, laser, and pulse instant-on, your radar detector does you NO GOOD. By the time it sounds the alarm, the cop already knows your speed.

There are tons of driving techniques that help reduce the chance of you getting caught, but the only foolproof way to avoid a speeding ticket is not to speed at all. (I am not very good at this part of the strategy )

THERE IS NO WAY FOR A RADAR DETECTOR TO DISTINGUISH BETWEEN POLICE RADAR, AND FALSE ALARMS. THEY ARE IN THE SAME FREQUENCY RANGE, AND NO RADAR RECEIVER CAN TELL THE DIFFERENCE.

It is physically impossible for a radar detector to get better range, but have "less false alarms" The phsyics of it just don't work.

I've used both the V1 and the 8500....and I will take the V1 hands down, any day over the Passport. I have NEVER gotten a ticket while I've had the V1 (now watch me get one tomorrow )
But, "smart speeding" combined with a good radar dectector will save you from seeing the flashing red and blues behind you.

Have to agree with clee130. Use your eyes and looking ahead and behind at all times usually picks them up before they tag you.

This weekend I was running ~60 in a 45 when a cop pulled out from a side street ahead of me.
I applied the brakes solid but not enough to dive the nose. My detector then went off but I was already down below 50.

Really so you did all these tests yourself that 2-3 other sites did and voted the 8500 better. Hmmm you must be special. Oh yeah, they do have technology to do less falsing. And it does work.

"falsing" technology is bullsh!t. Just like "360 degree protection" and "VG-2 cloaking" that doesn't even work. (on MOST radar dectectors) You believe everything you read??

I don't know about you, but I'll take my own experiences to mean more that crap that I read.

So lets assume for a second that this "falsing" technology really does work. How does the radar dectector differentiate between a signal from a radar gun...and one from an automatic door when they are the same frequency and strength?? It's like saying that If I stand with my back to a group of people....and one of them throws a water balloon at me, then by some act of god (falsing) I'll be able to tell who threw it. I DON'T think so.

Russ - I'm not basing this on TESTING, because I don't have the funds nor the inclination to test all the different radar detectors out there. I'm basing it on Physics. If you like to believe everything you read, then go read "National Enquirer" and be amazed by what they tell you.

I understand as for pure detection of the frequency, but it's certainly technically feasible. In my earlier post I suggest it's harder and harder and what I mean by it is that it would be bulky and expensive.

I am certain it's possible though (and would like to suggest such in a more polite way than Russ just did) to distinguish one device from another on the same wavelength. It's done all the time. The same way you can tell the difference between Christina Aguilera and Barry Manilow on 97.90 mhZ frequency modulation ("Kiss 98 FM"), it is possible to get into frequency signature, etc. and encode the products for certain signatures. However, I would imagine this would be quite expensive and would require frequent updates to the device.

Any engineers who can help me on this one? I'm a little over my head.

I have a Whister and it does determine what radars are being used by showing it on the screen with the distance. There are also different sound intesities. It has worked for me everytime. People really need to get used to the signals and situations though to understand what they are picking up. If you are out on a country road and it goes off and continues to go off, you can bet its a cop. If your in the city or heavily populated area, it can be harder to detect a cop's radar but the signals are still different from picking up microwaves signals. In the populated areas, we should be taking it easy anyway.

The best way I've found to avoid flashing lights behind me and tickets all together is this:

slowing down.

Works wonders... and since I've slowed down, the stress level while driving is also a lot lower... I don't have to worry about getting pulled over.

Sorry but you obviously don't have alot of experience in Electronics. Any device can detect variants in certain signals, waves are longer, frequency is SLIGHTLY off, or in milliseconds cycles. I had a Bel 870i for over 2 yrs, and now a Passport 8500. The Bel rarely falsed, and only went off went it picked up a REAL radar. It did not detect any other one. For example, my friend was in Houston, I was with him. We were both following Andi, we were getting ready to race when our radar started going off, we were like carp hit the brakes, Andi started hitting his he has the V1. He slowed down to tell us his Radar was going off, I was like yeah we know already. The Bel picked it up before his and he was ahead of us at the time. So goes to show you the V1 isn't the best but it is dam good though.

I'm sorry, I don't agree. I've owned quite a few radar detectors in my 18 years of driving and some detectors filter out noise better than others. Check out http://www.speedzones.com and see what they say about the Passport. They say it gave less false alarms than any detector they've ever tested.

I agree that a detector is only part of set of tools you use in speeding. Common sense is the best tool.

That doesn't always work. The person in front of you might not see the cop. Then there's a chance that you're both cooked. I've heard stories about troopers pulling over more than one car at a time.

Speeding 101

Here is a reprint of a Car and Driver Magazine article; it's a "top ten" things to do to avoid a speeding ticket.

What does work is if you let the fool go about a mile ahead of you and use him/her as a buffer. It's worked for me and is better used at night when you can't see much.

This guy knows what he is talking about. I think he should have added "Don't hit your brakes". If cops are approaching you from behind they will know your guilty of going too fast. If it's nighttime, they can see your brake light's reflection on trees and roadsigns behind you. There are times when I should have been pulled over and got by not showing that I am going too fast. I used to drop gears to slow down instead but I think just letting off the gas will slow the car at a good rate instead of making the car nosedive. Granted in a 65 zone, I drive 75 but I do most of what is described in the article and haven't gotten a speeding ticket in the last 6 years and I average higher speeds now.

Fine, I'll give you that... but tell me, how will the detector know which signal is which? Realize that signals will be effected by such things as fog etc. So yes, there will be difference, but you STILL don't know what the source is.

www.radartest.com is a bunch of Biased BS. There is SO much false information on there. For example it states that the V1 weighs more than any other detector...hmm...too bad the Passport 8500 is 8.9 ounces and the V1 is 8.6. Plus it states that the V1 is NOT programmable. Another myth. I actually have the instructions to program it sitting right in front of me.
Craig Peterson (the author of radartest.com) uses false information and shady testing to make sure that he can report on how inferior the V1 is.
