IF you have a five speed, you could place a reference table over the speedo. But why not just get a SE ECU. What's the point of having no speed limiter if you don't know how fast you're going?

its only temporary.. you can plug it back in real easily

There's no need to check your local laws to find out whether or not this is illegal, it is a FEDERAL law, so if you are in the US, it is illegal

How-2 Remove Speed Limiter

Ummmmmmmm ... k.. so I now have no speed limiter, but I also can't tell how fast I'm going.

Hopefully I'll have a friend nearby with a radar gun who can tell me ...

NickStam....

hey, can you make a write up over this installing a switch too in the dash somewhere. i think it would be great to have a switch to activate it. that way, if you doin a highway battle and you need to push your max a little harder, you can flip a switch and be on your way.....

Re: NickStam....

I thought about that.. but i decided i wasn't going to have anyone stripping wires and connecting it or anything like that..

Does swapping an SE ECU remove the limiter? Is it that easy?

Thanks for the reply Don. I didn't have a good feeling about the legality behind it.

this is because you have a 98

Let's see if I have this straight...

I have a 97 GXE 5-speed, now if I am going to swap it with another ECU to remove the limiter I'm going to need to get a 97 SE ECU, But, does it need to be from a 5-speed??? Does an auto have different programming? Also, developing an on/off switch for the new wire removal way is something to look into.

the ECUs have to be very very similar. i was looking into this a while ago and parts of the serial numbers have to match. hopefully someone will better explain this. and about the swithc, i hope it can be done...

then it must be a 5spd ECU

you have a 97 so you can also use a 96 or 95 5spd ECU

im looking into it

all thats required for the speedo to work is an electrical connection, so a typical electrical switch setup would work just fine i would think. im going to look into this tomorrow.... for that very rare instance when i feel a need to go over 118mph and risk death and/or imprisonment...

"do you know how fast you were going son?"
"no officer, i dont have a working speedometer"
heh i bet that would go over well...

just thought of something

i just thought of this... would this affect the odometer too? it would be a shame to buy a car that says it has 50K miles and it really has 100K....

If you get the ECU, it should be from the same year, must be the same transmission type and should be the same emission spec (Cali vs. Fed). I notice that everyone keeps leaving the third part out.

since you have a GLE-R does that mean you can use the 5spd SE ECU?

He also forgot to mention that your ECU light will come on as a failure, and the error was recorded into the ECU and next time ur car needs a check, the dealer hooks it up, it will see what happened.

Oh yeah, also people who did this on there 3rd gens, noticed a loss in power, most likely the ecu needs to know how fast your going,
