500 mile club (one tank of fuel)

This morning I managed to hit the 500 mile mark on one tank of fuel. But at 501 miles it started to sputter. I made it to 503 before I had to pull over and break out the gas can.

I only remember reading about one other member who has done this before. Anyone else?

did you do a lot of highway driving to get that many? I'm impressed!

Closest I've come is 440, but I will be doing plenty of driving this weekend (all highway) so I'm hoping for 450+

I commute 55 miles a day for work. I had to force myself to drive 65 or below the entire time. The throttle was never matted. It saw half throttle maybe one time. Even when I left stop lights I never used more than 8% throttle and kept the RPMs low in each gear. It wasn't easy watching all those other cars pass me all the time. Usually I am the one passing all of them at 80-100mph each day.

With the current gas prices, you'd think everyone would want to try. Although it really isn't a challenge so much as another personal goal that I hit.

I have hit 550 twice and routinely get over 500 on the highway, not driving over 75 mph. In the city is another matter, more like 350 on a 23-mile round trip stop-and-go commute.

I've only ever gotten to 360-380 and filled it up when the gas light came on... never tried pushing it till dry, cuz I don't carry extra gas... but you're right, with gas prices the way they are, it might be time for something like that... I'm gonna start with a goal of 400 for now...

I expect you A32 drivers to be in the 500s. It's more difficult to get a A33B to that mark. And mine has a 4.133 differental, as opposed to the 3.812 that came with it. I can probably get it to 530+ with a few changes.

Highest I've gotten what my first tank of gas in this Max. 430.......and that's the only time since then I've even past 380.
That's great, I would have never guessed 500 would have been makable. I'm going to have to try that.

I can and will hit 500. I have hit 475+ before gas light came on, so I know I can get 500.

You can drive quite a ways after the gas light goes on - almost 2 gallons, maybe 1.8 or so left.

I've heard that this could be bad for the injectors or engine to let the gas run out like that. Is there any truth to this?

Before the 00 injectors, my trips to Gainesville got me that much. Cruise at 75 no A/C, gets me a long way. But my fuel light is flakey sometimes, so I don't trust it. It came on when there was one gal left before

Not so much problems with the fuel injectors, but more the fuel pump I believe.

I'm pretty sure I could have gone that much or more when I drove from SanFran to Seattle. I was the middle of the night with no traffic. Even at about 1/4 tank, I was at 450miles. But you get gas when you can at 3:00am in boonieville.

But to get 500 miles on your daily drive is incredible. But let's assume the take is 18.5 gal. 500/18.5 is about 27 mpg. Is that good for a 3.5 maxima?

I usually get ~430 before I fill up on the highway in my second gen...cruising at 80 mph, at 2.7K rmp.
In my fourth gen the gas gauge is broken but i usually get about 250miles out of 11-12 gallons of gas

500 miles = 804 km!!! Wow I will never get that. The most I usually get is 372.8 miles (600km). Time for a tune-up and granny driving.

I feel like crap now. I was so happy when I changed my knock sensor and my highest milage possible went from 325miles (bad KS) to 347(new KS), lol. then again, with the new KS, i've been takin advantage of the much improved bottom end. But I'm gonna try for the 400 mark. I gotta gas up tonight anyways.... damn gas prices

When I was driving from Seattle to Providence, RI I hit 532 somewhere in the Dakotas before I wimped out and headed into a gas station. Gas light was not even on. Same thing from Albany, NY to LA except this time it was in flat A$$ Kansas. Cruise control on 65 from Seattle, and if I remember correctly 70 through Kansas. Now city driving is a whole other story. My max BLOWS in the city (at least in comparision to my fiancee's 97 Civic LX lol.)

edit: No way in hell I could do that now. My max was stock at the time.

No one actually gets 18.5 out of them. If you get 17.8-18.0 you're doing great. Mine won't run beyond that. The gas can I brought with me had approx. 1.2 gallons in it and I drove to work then the gas station afterwards. Totalling about 3-5 miles. Then it only took 16.8x to fill it up. So if I use 503/18.0 it's actually 27.94. That is impressive for any 3.5 but I was honestly trying for 30, which would get me to 540 miles. I think it can be done with the 3.812 gear, stock tires (narrow), perfect alignment, fresh wax and the proper technique of course.

I think if you went on a long trip like I did, you could do it easy. Stop and go traffic is the mpg killa.

Every Nissan I have ever had seems to have a fuel saving speed of about 55-70mph. Beyond thet they all seem to get very thirsty. And to think my coworkers' '95 540i Sport gets 25mpg crusing at 80mph makes me sick. I can't even get 25mpg at those speeds.

I couldn't do it on a long trip. I have been on several long trips that almost emtpied the tank at 425ish miles. Even using that super good New Jersey 94 Octane Sunoco gas. I simply don't have the patience to drive 65mph for that period of time. Besides, 95% of what I travel is highway miles and I am seldom in stop-&-go traffic. My commute is usually in the opposite direction of the masses so I have it pretty good.

Damn, 500 miles is insane!

I'm lucky if I get to 300 by the time I hit 1/8 of a tank. I usually get 19mpg. Last time I filled up I saw the highest # yet--21.3mpg. I was happy at the time, but I know it's still much lower than I should be getting.

What irritates me is that maxilvr06 has this pic of the computer in his car saying that he got 36.2mpg, and he says, "I got an average of 36.2 mpg over a two week period when i decided to take it easy and see how good my gas mileage could possibly be. This is about 70% highway and 30% city driving. I was really surprised to see how accurate that trip computer was when i calculated the gas mileage myself and got right at 36 mpg, just as the computer calculated it." No offense, maxilvr06, but I just can't believe that. Even if you're filling the tank 1.5 gallons to empty (it takes 17 gallons), that means you drove 36.2*17= 615.4 miles on that tank! Unless you got the one super VQ that was designed to be as efficient as a 1.x liter Civic....

I generally get 500 or better on each tank. If I didn't, I'd be stopping twice per week instead of once (and I still have gas left when I do stop). That's not to say I haven't gotten less than that but it was almost entirely due to lots of city driving.

This weekend I drove from Hillsborough, NC to Dawsonville, GA and back with a detour to Clarksville, VA. I got gas at Exit 160 in GA (on I-85) and drove to Clarksville, VA then back to Hillsborough, NC and the next day I still drove another 30 miles before getting gas and the light wasn't on. That's approx. 500 miles for those keeping score and I would say I could have made it another 20 miles or so before the light ever came on.

Its like someone said, the Maxima seems to love 55 - 70 mph in 6th but anything north of that and you're asking for a gas thirsty ride. I've also found that if I do stop and go for more than a few miles the mpg drops dramatically.

It makes sense, though. If you aren't moving, your mpg = 0. And if you are taching 2500 rpm before each shift, you're effectively running 70+ mph (as the engine would be seeing it were it in 6th and taching that high) with less airflow and warmer air until you reached a higher speed. It may not be much difference in airflow or temp but it all adds up.

But congrats on the 500+ mile per tank mark! I know you are trying to figure out how you can do it over and over again... gas is getting expensive!!!! Time to buy a tornado, I guess!

Was getting ~17 MPG average. Replaced my O2s (stock exhaust) about 800 miles ago (going to calc the MPG tomorrow). Hoping for atleast 19-20 MPG with the new O2s. Y-pipe sitting at home and b-pipe on the way so I'll do the MPG again in a few weeks with the full exhaust installed to see how much that helps
