That's only on a brand-new Maxima. Other cars, believe it or not, sell for thousands over invoice. Now if the car you're interested in is being sold at an authorized Benz dealer then go for it. But I don't think it works that way, starmark pre-owned is not gonna be 40 grand on a S500. 40 grand is not chump-change why don't you finance a 530i with 40 down? If you do a 24-month loan with 40 grand down, your payments would be around $316/month. Get the heated steering wheel, dang that's a nice feature.

Nissan is nowhere near the best car company in the world but that is beside the point.

I drove a '97 black S500 back in the day, it was TIIGGHHHT!!! First of all, while it has been called boxy and too big, the 97-99 S class is my favorite style. I just think the clear tails and the rims look really good. I also like the huge, boxy elegant look. When I drove the car I was amazed at how fast it was. I remember I floored it from a light and I was going like 70 before I knew it. Also, I rode in it, and the driver was going 100+ thru south Florida traffic like it was nothing. It was amazing how the car could just cruise like that at that speed and then slow down like it was nothing. Truly a good crusing car. This was a black one with grey leather, so it was really really phat. The Xenons are tight, and the Bose bumps better than any factory sterio I've heard. I remember I got out of the car while it was bumpin' and it sounded like it had 2 12's in there. It really really sounds good. God that car was so phat, they really are worth all that money. I was 15 then too, so I really was lucky to get to drive a car of that calibur. (drove a black '97 S600 too, and OHMYGOD!!!!!!!)

Again, when it sounds too good to be true, it probabely is. Just like the '00 540i sports for $35k deal someone posted.
Otherwise, you can tell me who is selling, I will buy it.

All I can say is if it's that cheap, do a THOROUGH title/background check on the car. Both of the cars I was looking at turned out to be salvaged from an insurance company auction and fixed up to be sold cheap. My insurance company said the VIN's flagged and they wouldn't do anything but liability coverage. The dealers said the warranties were VOID. And the bank freaked when they pulled the VIN# and would not finance a car with a salvage history (not to mention they require full coverage insurance on cars that they have a lien on)...so I bagged on the whole thing. I'm still looking though.
I'm usually very impatient, however when dealing with that sort of $$$, I'll take my time.
Just be careful, and if your deal is legit, more power to you. I'd jump on it.

Two different type of cars for two different type of people. Driver takes BMW for driving pleasure, slushbox lovers take Benz for ultimate smooth and luxury.
I dissagree....n/m

I caught myself doing 70MPH into 40 just because I thought I was going 40mph, it rides so smooth but hadles like a sports car. Not to mention that BMW Auto Tranny is the ****. Oh not to mention that thing was a cruser at 130MPH, I thought I was going 80. now I didn't do this on purpose, I just got on the intersate and gased it, I was just crusing along and thought I wasn't going that fast, there were no other cars on the road, I looked down and it said 130 and I said DAMN this is a BADA$$ car, I would love to drive a 750IL sometime

this doesn't have much relavence...
but i was looking at one of the more recent motor trends and it had an article on the S600, the one with the V12. the features that caught my eye was the distronic cruise control, when CC is engaged, and a car pulls in front of you or something, the car automatically slows down to keep a good distance from you and the other car, pretty cool IMHO. the other feature was the V12 deactivation, why do you need the waste gas by using all 12 cylinders when your cruising at 70mph? well this features closes gas flow to 6 of the 12 cylinders, giving 20-25% better gas mileage(avg. gas mileage tested by M/T was 24mpg, thats good for a V12), the other 6 cylinders activate when you accelerate. i thought that i would just share some cool info, personally i like both cars, and i agree that the benz would be more luxurious vs. bmw, being more sporty, i've never driven a 7-series bmw, but i have driven a 98 540i auto and a 97 S600, obviously, there is no contest between the 2 of those cars, but i think its more on preference, sport or luxurious.
btw, the 540i i drove had more miles than the S600, 75k vs. 40k, and it drove better for some reason(quieter, smoother) i guess the previous owner of the S600 really did a number on it, be careful when buying used, even if it is a BMW or BENZ
