In Washington, the trooper has 48 hours to file the ticket or it is void. Most of them don't do this, but hardly anybody knows the law. So, if you walk into court with a copy of your ticket from the records department that shows it was filed more than 48 hours after it was issued, you get off scot-free. Check to see if NJ has a similar law.

only from what I've heard
In NYS and NJ the troopers will be there. They are paid overtime to be in court. I've had numerous friends go to court in NYS and except for one they all had to pay. The only reason I wouldn't plead not guilty is I hate to keep thinking about it until the court date and then pay it anyway because a justice/judge says so. If you pay the fine you can start forgetting about the 39 months today. If not, you have to drag it out another 2 months or so. Good luck whatever you choose.

Hire a good criminal defense lawyer, and your odds are pretty good. They're not used to it -- they are used to some shaky little kid showing up by himself and going "ahhh but ahhhhh... other people were speeding too... ahhhh.."

They aren't used to a strong defense with motions for discovery, motions to dismiss, etc etc.
I am going to trial for my 5th a week from today. Will let you all know how it goes.

reschedule
One thing that I've tried (it worked) was to reschedule the hearing a couple of times to the days that the arresting trooper won't be working. Even if he does get paid overtime to show up in court, it won't be worth it for him. All you have to do is find out when he is not working. You can be creative by calling the cop's district office, pretending to be an old friend, an IRS agent..who cares...just get them to tell you what days he works and what days he's off. Once you find out...reschedule the court date to a day that he's not working. Chances are, he won't show up, which of course gets you off the hook!
Good luck.
Good luck.
