learned something new @ the dealership today
i found out yesterday (at least at my dealership) that they list 3 different prices: cost, list, price. i was looking for a trans position sensor for my 5spd and i was looking over on the computer monitor when he pulled the part#. so the cost was listed as $11.xx, the list was $19.xx, and the price was $33.xx. so the parts guy knows me and was gonna charge me $19, and then i said, what is the price column for? and he's just like.... well that's just what we charge some people (i bet they take advantage of women and the elderly). and apparently the cost is what the dealership pays. i was talking to the parts guy and he told me he pays 10-15% over cost. so anyway, i asked him if there's anyway i can get it for cost, he's like no, but i can give you the part for $15 =). sooooooooo, ya just sharing what i learned @ the dealership today.
That's so funny, so the guy convinced you that he was doing you a favor by selling it to you at list? That's a new scam if you ask me.
Cost means nothing, like I said with the amazing OEM oil filter deal I got. They guy didn't have change (I would not pay $5 each that's no discount) so he just gave me 3 for $10. You don't think he was making a profit at that price? Of course he was. He probably put the full $10 in his own pocket, that *(&()&)&*()&)*(. Where's the sales tax? If you run your own business these types really break your profits....

well, i actually had to pay the cashier lady, and i got a receipt and everything. okay so i may not be gettin a deal, but i looked up this part online, and i get a discount @ jerryromenissan and it came out to be cheaper (about the same, but if i ordered from jerryrome i would have had to pay shipping). so i'm just saying i am happy cuz i wouldn't have been able to get this part anywhere else for cheaper.
Dealerships can be trusted as far as you can thrown them. I understand they are like any business that needs to turn a reasonable profit to keep the doors open but they look for any opporunity to prey on the misinformed, naive and trusting individiuals whether it be on service, parts or vehicles. I used to work for one so I know firsthand some of their tactics.

The auto industry probably makes about half their revenue on parts and repairs alone. I would estimate a stealership makes over 1/3rd his revenue doing repairs, service and selling marked up parts...

You have to shop around, call all the dealers in your area. The price from dealer-to-dealer in one area alone is really big. An part may cost $3 at one and $10 at another. Also, don't buy parts from a place that also deals in high end cars like Infinity, Lexus, or the like. They tend to have very high parts prices, much higher than "normal", just Nissan dealers. Also, if the part is really expensive, you can call dealers in other states, and even with shipping you may get a better price. You can try http://www.courtesyparts.com/
Many people with Z-cars use them, and they will ship to the UK (as the Nissan dealers in the UK seem to have much higher prices).
