After totalling my former Maxima, I'm ready to buy a nice new 2000 SE. Dealer around here is Selling for $100 over invoice. Anyway, I'm looking for an SE(5spd) with only security + convenience and the Bose. He's having trouble locating one like that that because they all seem to have leather, so I was thinking of going aftermarket for the stereo. I have no clue what's out there so can someone tell me if I can get something comparible to the Bose for the same amount of money($900) or less?

all out?

if you're not really thinkin' of going all out and just want something decent, then i say go for the pioneer line up. i forgot the model number but the silver one that is double din should fit well in the factory location of the 5th gen max. if you start out with the premium sound package like me then u should rip it out and get the AC vent peice from the parts department. tell them you want the bottom of the line 5th gen AC vent. u'll see why. and if you have the premium sound you'll need to bypass the stock bose amp. just cut off some wires and connect em' to others. so you can still complete the circuite and not use the amp. use a tester to see which weire is for which speaker. it helps to have another person sit in the car to hear wehre the tone is coming from. but if you plan to go all out then 900 is barely good enough for a sub station. or in mycase not even close.

I don't want to go all out. I had the bose on my last Max and was quite satisfied with it. Basically I'm willing to spend up to 1k for a sound system, but I'd rather not have to spend another 800 on leather seats which I don't especially want anyway. So if I get a Max w/o the bose, could I get a similar quality system for under 1k?

yeop that's the one

my friend had that in is volvo and it works real nice. it powers the stock speaker real well so you don't need to get new ones. it's really worth it. the dislplay is perfect, you'll get sick of a flashy dislpay after time but this deck has all that u need and none that you dont. but you might need to grind the inside of your dash kit (the bottom of the opening) so that when it'll clear the dash kit if when it opens out (only if you are flush mounting which makes it look a lot better.)

I would not get the Pioneer double din. The fact is, no double din decks have any security features (flipping face, removable face, etc..). They are attractive targets for thievery.

I'd settle for a fancy single din deck with at least a motorized flipping face instead. Kenwood Excellon and JVC El-Kameleon are both pretty good. I have the JVC El-Kameleon Lx-1 (it's the LX-10 now) and it is excellent.

Yeah, you're better off using the double-DIN cutout for a DIN HU and a signal processor.

they want it then they'll get it

people that gaff stereo stuff usually know what's in the car. most people if not all end up leaving the detachable face under the passangers seat or in the glove box. i dont' know anyone that's got a aftermarket deck for a month and still carries the face with him.. so might as well get what you like and fits better. cuz think of it, if someone wants to take it, just let them have it. make sure u got insuranse tho.
