National Auto Research (NAR) publishes weekly, monthly, bimonthly and annual guides, known as Black Books. Recognized as the most accurate in the industry, Black Book guides contain new and used car and truck pricing for the automotive and finance industries, as well as vehicle descriptions and options.
The weekly guide provides current reports of used car auction results in four distinct classifications to used car dealers, new car dealers, bankers, wholesale buyers and credit union subscribers. The new vehicle price guides contain Dealer Invoice and Manufacturers Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) for cars, trucks and optional equipment. All used vehicle guides provide loan values for finance purposes and certain products include VIN interpretations.

NAR also offers software and electronic databases for the automotive industry and residual values for the finance and leasing markets.

No, no, no! Everyone is overlooking the NEW STANDARD for auto prices: ebay Motors!

If you look at running and completed auctions, one can get a good idea of the price range in many areas of the USA. I say this, because, unless the car is rare or such, most winners of an auction for a car will live in the area of the car's location. It's a very dynamic source for price data just for the fact that they have a high volume of cars there. Now, if ebay would just lower their fees for selling a car...

that's extremely annoying.
i was gonna go to the Manheim auction, but my friend (dealer) admitted he couldn't get me the price I got at Nissan. $200 over invoice new, May 04. Just go to the dealers or check their prices online or call them.

As far as being better than KBB or edmunds if you're the end-buyer, I agree. I talked to a dealer in GA who will get a car at the dealer auction and turn around and put it on eBay. There's still a good markup on the eBay prices, but it's definitely more on point than KBB/Edmunds/Blue Book.

ebay

if you look carefully, you'll notice that majority of the cars listed on ebay never reach reserve.. the reason you can't fully rely on ebay is b/c buyers demand a very large discount if they dont see the cars...

Ebay may give you an idea of current vehicle purchasing thrends, however you still don't know the actual cost (or estimated cost)dealers are buying the cars at and I believe this is the info Roman-dude is seeking. Any reserve price on an auction will still have a markup attached to reach that reserve, this is a business and you do it to make money, not break even. Hope you find a resourse that has a Black Book. Good Luck...

Finding excellent car dealers you can honesty trust is not an simple task. The market is overflowing with dealerships declaring to offer unbeatable deals that their competitors simply cannot match. In such a lively contested sector it can be incredibly hard to separate the good from the bad and the bad from the illegal. It's vital therefore, that you take your time to shop around, listen to the opinions of your friends, family and those you know who've had recent experience with car dealerships and to utilize the internet to get a comprehensive overview of which dealers you can trust.
