How true is it to wait 72 hours after resetting the ECU to pass inspection?

I just had my KS replaced on Sunday and plugged my stock ECU back in this morning for inspection. The computer failed me because it had recently been plugged in. I'm assuming that the ECU resets after being unplugged for a long time. I'm not throwing codes at all but it's been months since I drove with the stocker.

I do have 60 days to let the ECU get used to the engine and KS but they tell me to wait 72 hours then come back. I'm thinking about waiting longer.

What do you guys think?

don't you have to drive it around for a little while so that it can gather information?

i think it is about 40-50 miles or so for the ecu to cycle all the systems once

I was told its about 200 miles for the ecu to "re-learn" and adapt. I say wait a bit longer.

to what MDeezy said.. It think it takes on the order of 200-250 miles and a few complete cycles to get the ECU out of its "just reset" state.

Deezo - make sure you turned the ECU screw back all the way - I know someone else had a problem where the car would never exit this "learning" mode and it turned out to be their ECU screw was not turned all the way anti-clockwise to its stop.

Cheers.

I'm using the Equuis to reset the codes but I'll wait until next week to go back.

Great - just make sure the ECU screw is in the right position. Even if you haven't touched the screw recently, if its not locked all the way anti-clockwise, the ECU may not complete the test mode.

Wouldn't the ECU rely on miles rather than "days"?

Well, they just said 72 hours assuming that I will be driving the car around giving the ECU time to get used to everything. They caution people to not bring it in for inspection right after resetting the ECU.

Info from a friend of mine who is a shop owner says its not time but mileage put in for the computer to be in a "ready" state before testing can be done. He said usually 100-150 miles would do it.

I had the same problem the last two times I emission tested. It had been days and many miles since I had reset the ECU before I went in, but they still could not get a reading. I don't know the exact mileage or time the car has to run before the ECU can be scanned but I went back a week later and they still could not read the ECU. Then a week after that it worked.

Cool, I'll just wait a couple of weeks because I don't feel like paying them another 30 bones.

Bendy: If you post in this thread again, I'm giving you some time off. Go read the stickies in the 4th Gen Forum.

they charge you for getting your emissions done again? I thought it was a standard that if you fail emission you have 30 days to get the problem corrected and re tested for free

The last time I failed with my truck, they told me I get one try or something like that but I'll find out for sure.

If the shop owner is cool, They can hook a ODBII scanner to your computer and check if the system is ready for emission test. I seen people with MIL on and they fix the car and had to drive around for hours till the system was in "ready" state. Did all this with the ODBII scanner plugged in so they knew exactly when it was eady to test. He also did mention that not all fields must be in "ready" state to test. I was told newer cars need less "ready" fields than older ones. Sorry but I can' remember how many.

I think it depends on the kind of driving you do not just miles and time

What my mechanic told me:

Fail inspection
Speed sensor code
Replace sensor
Reset CEL
Drive 60 miles (continous highway and local)
Pass inspection

Hope this will be able to help you.
