hood flew open at 60+mph pics

good news is i got my exhaust system completely redone and i like it.. all new 2.5 inch mandrel bent pipes and a dual tip ractive muffler .. plus the shop cut the bumper to match.

bad news is after i dropped off the car i believe someone popped my hood and didnt latch it back correctly. i payed, picked up the car and left the shop. i was in 3rd gear when all of a sudden the hood flies back covering the windshield. i was able to still see through the bottom of the windshield. i locked up the brakes and pulled over to the side.

damage - carbon fiber hood completely ruined. cracked everywhere. carbon separating from the fiberglass ribs. im not even concerned about the hood, i have my factory one still. the biggest damage is the roof. several big dents in the front half. in the pics its hard to tell. but it looks real shltty. im so pissed about the roof.

i went back to the shop and told the manager what happen but he claims they never popped the hood.

can a body shop get the roof back to new ? like it was never damaged.

hood pins would have prevented this.. but since i put the hood on ive had it up to 80 to 90 mph with minimal buffeting from hood. im going to put the factory hood back on and hope a body shop can fix the roof.

how does the hood latch look? does it look like it broke away from the underside of the hood? if the latch is undamaged then it is clearly the shop's fault.

Roofs are very tricky when it comes to damage. If you know anyone thats very good, have them take a crack at it. My first car was broken into through the sunroof. So there were crowbar marks all over the place. I had my uncle fix it and you couldnt even tell the difference. He told me tho, that at the dealership he works for they would just replace the roof skin.

Best of luck getting them to cover it

bummer on the damage. Years ago I got in an accident, a mechanic wired the hood down to limp it home but didn't do a good enough job, end result same as yours. Should have checked it myself.

is your rear tire really as bald as it looks in the pic?

i just checked the latch. it works fine and holds the hood down as usual which only leads me to believe someone didnt latch it back properly.

Last year I saw the same thing happen to a guy infront of me. He slammed on his brakes/pulled over, hopped out, slammed it shut, and drove off.

It was pretty hilarious at the time, but luckily we weren't going much over 50mph at the time or it could have got ugly.

Wow, luckily it didnt smack your windscreen and crack that. Glad you were able to see and get off the road safely.

A decent body shop should be able to get it back to new no prob, just may cost a lot of $$$. This happened to me once but I just on my CF hood, the latch didnt work and I didnt install the Hood pins yet, had to pick up a part and I was only going 8mph and the hood lifted, good thing I had the hood struts on but it was scary for those few secs.

Mine just popped open once, but it didnt go all the way open, so there was no damage. Sucks about what happened to yours man, CF is pretty expensive...

30 dollar hood pins could have avoided this as stated...all C/F hood companies brag about o.e. fitments but no c/f hood should be run without pins period. Glad everything worked out okay man.

My CF hood got blown back against my windshield once by a strong wind at the track. I just had it propped up in the pit area and the wind caught it and smacked it back against my windshield and craked the windshield.

Glad you are ok, sorry bout your hood and roof.

That happened to my buddy too... he went to change a simple light bulb and closed the hood and the latch was old and rust and unlatched while driving to work and smashed the windshield and damaged the roof...likely no one was hurt...it was a little expensive to repair, but things happen all you can do is get it fixed and move on....

Looks like you guys with CF hoods need to create some air dams to use some downforce to keep that thing pinned shut. Something similar to what the hood bra has to keep it from flapping about on the hood.

Those will hold the hood down, and I think it would look good with a carbon fiber hood also. My friend has them and hasn't had any problems with it, or hood flying up. I would like to add my friend has regular hood pins and for some reason his hood fly up and hit his windsheild, cracking it. I dunno what happend, but this is making me kinda nervous about getting a carbon fiber hood, especially being that my foot is a little heavy on the highway.......

Those are hood locks and they will NOT work on the maxima hood. I had some for my CF hood, luckily prior to drilling the holes in my hood it dawned on me that they will not work.

Our hood is too slanted at the point where those would go in. The lock mechanism will only turn on a plane parallel with the ground assuming you mount them straight up and down. You'd have to either modify the locking mechanism or mount them at an angle (would be unbelievebly hard to do) to get them to lock.

yea i thought about how angled our hood was but i figured i could get it to work. I really do not want to get hood pins but seeing this thread i guess im just going to have to live with them. Maybe auto zone or Orileys has some. I hate the thought of drilling holes in my hood though. What are you other people using to secure your hoods down?
