Is it worth it to upgrade to a used stock-Bose system from stock non-Bose?

I've been looking for a stock Bose stereo from a 4th gen for some time now to upgrade my stock non-Bose system. The ones I've heard sounded good compared to it and I thought that if I could get a good deal on a complete system, it would be worth it.

Well, most guys who have upgraded the Bose don't want to sell them since they want to put it back in if/when the sell the car. Those that are willing to sell are pretty firm on the price since I understand it is a relatively expensive option.

From some threads on the 4th gen BBS and emails from potential sellers, it seems like going from non-Bose to Bose is a lesson in frustration. Many guys also call into question the quality of the Bose system itself citing premature deaths of the head unit.

Now I'm thinking that for the same money as a used Bose system, I should just get a decent aftermarket headunit and upgrade my speakers when funding becomes available.

Opinions?

Bose Stereo

The sound on the Bose stereo is excellent for something that is stock--but the thing with upgrading to the bose is that in the front A pillars, there are a pair of tiny speakers and the speakers in the back are different than whatis in the GXE. There would be some rewiring work that you would need to do. In addition, please keep in mind that the radio deck is not really "Bose" perse, it says it--but is manufactured by Clarion.

=) hope this helps

Don't do it!

Get a high quality aftermarket head unit with good power, speakers all around and if you want, an amplifier. Don't forget...these things can be taken with you if you sell the car. I still have some stereo pieces from my previous car, and I sold some to fund my new stereo.

Any recommendations for head unit, amp etc. I'd like a single DIN CD head unit with a remote (ability to play MP3 files would be a big plus).

I'd start with speakers first, then a head unit, and if you want an amp. If the head unit has good power then the amp is only need for people who want the peak stereo performance...hemm hemm ME!

My philosophy (sp?) is:
Spend a little more money on quality parts and then you don't have to spend the money in the future to replace them. I've had lots of stereo equipment and only had trouble with low end things. Find a local shop and buy stuff from them(not a large chain store) then if you have problems, they don't charge you to look at the stereo and are more likely to keep you happy then the large stores.

For head units: you have to see for yourself. Most of the options are the same, find headunits that you like and are easy to use and understand (I don't like kenwood because I feel that their displays are cluttered) MP3 playback is still rare in headunit..so if you want it you'll pay. The aiwa unit is under $300 (the cheapest by far)

You can get a head unit for under $300, front component speakers for $100 and up (depends on the level of speaker), and rear coaxial speakers for $50 and up.
For a decent system look to spend around $500

I've put in over $350 on just front and rear speakers, and these were a steal at that price. So you have to determine what you want in your stereo and buy accordingly.

I love my Clarion.

I know the newer ones can have a piece you can plug into the back so you have an aux channel to adding MP3 player. I have heard one of the new top Clarion models and it sounds sweet. They have a nice soundstage, but have good bottom end compared to some units. I don't like units that have bass enhancers, and stuff like that because it takes away from the recording. If your a basshead it's great, but I'm not a basshead anymore.(Ok I am a little ) I try to get a unit that has as close to a nutral sound as possible. It also depends on what speakers and amps you want to use.
My 2 cents. (And someone always disagrees! )

From my experience, the HD unit is ok but, the speakers SUCK. I'm currently running on my second pair of Bose speakers that I got really cheap after I blew my originals, front and back. These speakers were made to last through a 2 year lease or something. I've seen the whole system selling for about $400-$500, but they are definetely not worth the price + the hassle you will be going through to make it work. Get some aftermarket units and you won't regret it like I do.

Like the majority of everyones reply, dont do it. Its not worth the money and BOSE doesnt sound that great. I think BOSE is made by another comapny, Clarion maybe? Im not sure. For less money, you can afford a better sounding stereo. Your better off getting a set of MB Quart or JL Audio components up front and a good set of coaxils in the rear. As far as a HU (headunit), take a peek at Alpine, Kenwood, Namakachi (Is this spelled right?), or even Rockford Fosgate. They all make great sound and quality built products. I work at a local car audio store and can get products for 5-15% over dealer cost. Hey JJW, arent you located in NJ too? I asked this awhile back. If you do decide to go this way, I can help ya.

Synki,

Yes I am also in NJ...Somerset County...about 15min from exit 12 (and 10) off of rte. 287. I notice you are from Morris County which is also close to rte. 287. I pass right by there on my way to work way up in Sussex County.

Thanks for the offer. I will look at some HU's and email you the model numbers for pricing info.

Are there any brands that you don't carry? I've had a few Pioneer products in my day and was happy with them. Also, are there any mfrs that I should consider or avoid...do you recommend a certain HU over any others? I'd like it to be an in dash CD unit with a remote and CD changer controls built in. Must be hi-power and have room to add amps, subs, etc.

Yea im right off the Harter rd exit going 287 north from you. Its pretty close then huh? I do favor other brands then such as pioneer. We can get pioneer. I use Alpine. I like Alpine, many features and reliable. We dont carry Kenwood. As long as you get a HU with preouts, then you dont have to worry about being able to hook up amps, eqs, etc. Let me know on what you want and ill get some prices for you. If you want something that has high internal amp power and cd changer controls, expect to pay more then a basic unit. I use a Alpine CVA-1000, Alpine 180 eq, and Alpine 6 disc changer. I liek Alpine as you can see. I feel tha tkenwood is overpriced for a good HU. Just my honest opinion. Pioneer is good too, but I again personally dont favor them. Let me know about anything.
