So I was driving my gf back up to her house today at like 12am. I usually cruise at about 80mph. So I see a cop car pull on to the highway and I slow down. I expect him to do the usual. Kick it down to 55 and basicly slow traffic to a halt. Even though there isn't much traffic and the road is really straight. But he doesn't. He goes like 75-80mph. I say cool. I hang about 10-15 cars back and shadow him. I know there is nothing he can do. He doesn't have his lights on and he shouldn't be going so fast anyways. So I figure he wasn't paying attention. Next thing I know he signals right and slows down. I instantly clamp the brakes and match his speed to 55mph. The legal limit. I pass him ever so slowly. And he turns his lights on and pulls me over. So at this point its comical for me. He comes up to my window and asks me if I knew why I was pulled over. I said no. He asked if I knew how fast I was going.. I said no.. He said that I was going 75 mph, because HE was going 75mph. Note, I was 10-15 cars back the whole time. I knew this wouldn't fly in court. He asked for my lic. and reg. I gave it to him. He asks me how my driving record was. I replied "good". I have a unblemished record.. =) Asked the usual stuff about outstanding tickets blah blah, I say no. He went back to his car. And I started telling my GF about how this is funny because he really can't do anything but waste our time. And we didn't care anyways. He calls me over to his car and gives me back my stuff. He asked me again why I didn't know how fast I was going.. I said I was just following him.. =) He was like, didn't you notice you were passing traffic quickly? I was thinking.. Don't you know you're not supposed to do that without your lights on? But I kept my mouth shut and said I don't usualy stare at the speedo, I just go with the flow and I'm usually fine.. =) Hahah as my UNBLEMISHED record would show. Haha! Truth is I just keep an eye out and go 80mph all the time.. hehe. But anyways, all he could do was say, you should watch your speedo and have a good night.. HAHHAH!! I can't believe this feable attempt at giving me a ticket! Hahah. Or he was just bored or something.. Then!! He pulls his cruiser back on the highway and floors it.. Dude was crazy, and bored.. Hehe.. Funny though. Thought I would share with you guys. Watch out, cops have a new "technique" to catch you...

There was an editorial in Car and Driver about this a long time ago. It was in New Hampshire. A guy got pulled and ticketed for the same thing you did by NH State Police. The cop said he shouldnt have been going so fast. Guy said "Why not, you were?" Cop said "You dont know where I was going, it could have been an emergency." Guy said "Well, you didnt have your lights on, and you obviously had time to stop and pull me over." It went on and on and the guy ended up suing the State Police. It came down to the question of whether or not the law applies to cops.

C&D called the NH State Police to get some commment. They said that they case was still pending so they didnt want to talk about it. C&D said fair enough, answer this then "Does the law apply to police officers?" The police refused to comment about the case again. C&D said they meant it as a general question, not realted to the case. The cops still refused to answer. A$$holes.

Yea, basically the only time they can-->>

give you a ticket is if they have a rear facing radar unit on their vehicle. Police cannot and are not trained to "pace" vehicles behind them... "Don't let them fool ya"!!

I was driving along one night about 5 years ago doing the speed limit here in southern cali, because there are always a lot a highway patrol on this particular stretch of freeway. So I'm cruising along, minding my own business when some headlights come haulin up my a$$. I was in the left lane, and had a car to the right of me, so I speed up to go around the car next to me and get out of this guys way. As soon as I do, blam, flashing lights behind me. The damn highway patrol pulled me over for speeding. I tried to explain to him that I was just trying to get out of his way, but he wouldn't have it, made me walk the line and everything. A$$hole. So I decide to take it to court, but because of work, I missed my court date and ended up having to pay the ticket. Cops will try to get you on the most minor technicality. Protecting us my a$$!

Damn, that sucks he wasted your time. I pace the police/troopers I see all the time going down I-95, around the DC beltway, and across 66. I always figured he was "setting the pace/example" if he didn't have his lights on. I did have one trooper in Illinois move to the other lane, slow down to my door, and waved at me to slow it down...but I was pacing him at 90mph about 8 cars back (I guess that was pretty dumb)...then he ZOOMED off ahead of me again.

There was another trooper who was trying to get me as I was coming back from Philly down I-95. He exited off the expressway in one of those rest stops, I'd get "ahead" of him, and he would immedaitely re-enter...got up behind and paced me for a while, took off ahead, exited, and did it again. Annoying.

Mental note for everyone.

Officer: You know how fast you were going?

Me: Uh, yeah, I guess I was going xxx speed. Sorry about that.

Officer: Well, take it to court and get it reduced.

Me: okay.

When I requested a copy of the officer's notes, it included the following: Offender said he was going xxx speed.

Point is, don't every admit your speed. although being honest about your offense, might get you off sometimes, it more than likey just incriminates yourself come court time. This is always the officer's first question. Now you know why.

on a similar note, spring break this year, a couple of friends and i were driving down to mrytle beach from nyc... we got into south carolina after about 12 hrs and then took one of the exits off the 95... we noticed a car following us from a while ago and thought that it was someone who was just tagging along. all of a sudden the speed limit dropped from 75 to 45 so we slowed down... next thing we know, flashy lights and this trooper just races by us... i was like WTF?!? its kinda funny when such incidents happen... makes you wonder bout those 'speeding violations' dont it? thats y i stick to one rule...

I think for rear radar, he has to have the radar unit outside the car. Which he didn't. So I wasn't affraid of that. On top of that. There were turns and I wasn't the only one on the highway. How can he prove that he got the reading from me? I was 10-15 cars back. That won't stick either. He basicly had nothing.

Radar does work through glass. They also have computer controlled systems that reference off the vehicle speed sensor. That way, they can use radar in a moving cop car to track other moving targets. These can figure the speed of a vehicle in the cops lane...or an oncoming lane.

Laser, however, does not work through glass, fog, or rain...

They've saved my life on several occasions. Of course, I work with them every day. Alot of them are REALLY cool, but just like the medical field, most interations with Public Safety people are under the least favorable conditions, so your impression of them is tainted.

I have walked into dangerous situations on numerous occasions, and since our uniforms are very similar to PDs (I'm a paramedic), people have rushed us. PD is right behind us and tackled the a$$wipe. Another guy assaulted the ambulance, but we called PD and they were there 6 seconds after our 10-13. Yes, 6 seconds. As for speeding, I've driven by Troopers at about 105 (yes in the ambulance) and all they do is wave. So yes, they have saved my life, and yes, do speed and get away with it. As for the Maxima, I don't expect any special treatment if I get pulled over, but it hasn't happened.

Tell us, how realistic is Third Watch? My guess is the people do not look like the actors on the show in real life. How many of us called an ambulance a "bus" before that show? We called 'em bone boxes.

Third Watch is good drama, but not realistic. You do form relationships with FDNY and NYPD, but not like in the show. EMS is stationed in ambulances, not in a firehouse. They have cool call after cool call, the average EMS in NYC involves either alcohol of another drug about 75% of the time and is BS. Don't get me wrong, there are really cool calls that I get, but they are few and far between. Most of the calls are CCCs, also known as Coulda Called a Cab. And yes, actually we do call them buses.
Don't mind my rambling message, I'm a little tired.
