up date on the beater: check your battery terminals & fix hacked wiring

With Project Beater( http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=423124) needing much TLC the electrical system was next on my list. The battery and anything touching it was pretty much trash.

I knew the terminals were shot but i wanted to check the battery 1st. I swapped in an OEM battery that was rather fresh. it had been sitting around since may. it barely started the car. since the stock terminals looked as if they hadnt been clean since 96 and they were cracked in half i had to replace them. using some cheap epoxed terminals, new battery ring terminals, and some solder and a torch i replaced them. the car started perfectly with the new terminals. ill post pix tomorrow.

I checked my 98 and sure as **** the terminals were cracked in the same place. since i had gotten good at replacing them it was no sweat redoing mine. SO, check the OEM terminals since they seem really lame. i know 2 other nissans that needed new ones too. all cracking in the middle.

i also neatened up the amp wiring. there is 4 awg for power wiring and it was compleatly falling out of the fuse block and battery post. not to mention the left over crap in the trunk from a previous 2nd amp.
speaking if the stereo, the moron installed a 2 channel amp running 4 full range speakers, this blew 2 of them. i installed 2 new speakers and wired them to the HU and kept the amp for a future sub. the over all wiring was okay from the start but it looks as if the 2nd amp was an after thought. the wires were spliced in and left dangling. it could have shorted out. best part is the 150 amp fuse under the hood. haha right! like it needs it.

thats what it looked like. i removed all the unused crap, hid the good wires and distribution Y. ill tell you this: this car is really dirty.

yea luke i was surprised to see the rear seat with no hole like a 3rd gen. and to think, i threw away SE seats that had the hole. the metal support however has the hole.

chernmax the stick is long gone. it installed the hood and struts off my 98. it surprises me tho, how people will use such crude methods and instruments to rig things these days.

2 Da Max you said it. they used 2" sheet rock screws which did go through the metal seat back, but still.... very poorly exicuted.

Shawn..... dirt cheap huh.

You can run 4 speakers on a 2 channel amp you know. It's called running the amp at 2ohm stereo.....

IM not sure who the previous owner(s) was. but the car lacked any sign of maintenance. asside from the stereo it looks as if nothing was touched (other than some paint/body work done years ago).

yea but see they were wired in series..... which is an 8 ohm load. so over time who knows what it did. seems as if the 1st speaker ran hot and cooked the VC. the mid bass was compleatly seized while the tweeter still worked.

I just replaced my battery and wanted to change the terminals as well.

I got the same set as you did but haven't changed the positive terminal yet because I didn't know if I could take the other two wires out of that red connector box and wire them straight to the new terminal.

It appears that is what you did, correct? Can you post a close up picture of the positive terminal so I can see how you did it.

Thanks.

Good luck with the restore. You should use 24K gold plated terminals to hook up to the battery. It will not rust and you would not have to put any grease on them.

My homie chernmax came up with this idea.

Deaux, i cut the starter wire off and stripped it back about 1/2" and clamped it in the middle where its suppoesed to go. for the two 8 or 10 awg fuse wires i cut off the plugs, stripped the insulation and soldered the 2 of them to a single terminal lug, basically a huge ring terminal. i then bolted it to the battery terminal. in the pic there is an extra 4 awg wire for the stereo.

ramberg: i had similar gold plated terminals and they still got covered in corrosion. i also wanted a solid connection so wing nuts are out of the question. also not to mention i had multiple wires to connect. but hey these ones were very cheap so maybe someday i will buy the gold ones. bling!

Brake fluid looks disturbingly low.

Excellent job with the terminals, they looks so much better.

Just a little more background, those are not just 24K gold plated BLING terminals, they are Marine terminals which mean they are designed to handle much more corrosion and environmental elements. I had the standard old ones like you have on many cars and they all corroded. I have had my current set on for almost a year and they have not only been corrosion free, but BLING, BLING...

where do you get those uber ring terminals? I have a feeling my rings are shot. The ground terminal won't grab onto the post, everytime im under the hood it isn't seated properly on the post, even w/ sufficient tightening. =\

Picked up mine at Autozone, they were in the battery terminal section, except listed as 24K Marine terminals. Price was about $7.50- $8.00 per.
