Need Help with relay, its doing the opposite of what i want it to do

Need Help with relay, its doing the opposite of what i want it to do

ok so im wiring a relay on my car,its suppose to keep something off, unless i place somethin on it

but instead its always on, and when i place something on it, it turns off.

need help


ok its a bosch relay

here goes


85 and 87 are getting power

87a is the ground

86 and 85 have the other sides of the wire that are not powered

There are normally closed relays, and normally open. You have an NC, you need an NO.

how do i know which one is which? ok also have a tyco one besides the bosh


would i damage anything if switch the wires on the relay?

86 and 85 are trigger.
30 connects to 87a with no power.
30 connects to 87 when power is supplied.

right now i have 30 and 87

should i put it at 30 and 87a?

but when i put the ground on 87 the relay sparks, and doesnt spark when i have it on 87a

i dont think i've ever used 87a on a relay. i dont have one in front of me but i think normally 85 and 86 are the trigger(one being grounded and the other giving power ( in your instance you place something on it). then 30 and 87 are power and what you want to turn on.


edit, i just read jsutter's, his is much simpler to undertand

Wrong: Bosch does both.

85 to ground
86 to "unless i place something on it" which should be +12v
30 to +12v
87 what you want to turn on
