I don't really slow down, I move out of the dips from normal traffic and hit the tracks where its smoothest. If it is a set of railroad tracks that will cause me to bottom out, then I slow down, but there are only one set of tracks like that in my town

I slow down, sometimes to a crawl depending on the road and track, I could care less what other's say or think. Have been know to give the finger a couple of times as well, then I catch up and say bye bye.

I slow down when needed, but that reminds me of one time I was in a turn lane and the light for going straight was yellow. So this guy in a 70s car floors it accross the intersection, and as soon as he gets accross his hits the other side there is a dip. The next thing me and my friends saw was sparks fly everywhere from behind this guy.

You can bet he never did that again!

PS: It was a camera light, and the light turned red while he was 1/4 the way through, so he was flashed as well!

Yea DIPS in the pavement suck too. Nothing cooler than my friends telling me that they saw sparks comming out from the bottom of my car.

Shocks are expensive. Slow down for bumps, save yourself replacing the shocks for about $250 dollars a pair.

I forgot to mention this city of hell is infested with potholes some so nasty you might end up crashing your car into them. Because of that, sometimes a person can be driving in heavy traffic and be surprised by a nasty hole. Shoot, sometimes people get in serious accidents here when they fall into huge pits on the road.

Glad not to be me, eh?

At least the only part that seems to have suffered is my rear shocks.

Interesting. I'm getting rebuilds for $100-140 a pair and somebody else here is getting like $40 a pair. After time coilovers might actually be cheaper.

At the risk of sounding redundant...

I slow down over train tracks. When I was on stock suspension, I slowed down, not that I have my new suspension on I slow down a whoooole lot more, and I do the ever so popular technique of going sideway... It works!

when one wheel is up the other is still on the ground. So when the car drops back down, instead of dropping farther because both wheels are doing it, its just one side and you dont bottom out, or bounce the hell out of the car.


If my explanation made sense. . . if not then just try it, you should be able to feel the answer versus just going straight (I'm refering to bumps/speed bumps, and train tracks too)

train crossings in the Chicago area are NOTORIOUS - some of them you MUST go slow or risk damage.

There's some really bad RR crossings near me and I always slow way down but it's also true that the 4th gen chassis is not very stiff (IMO). The 5th gens are a lot better. To the original poster with a '96 I30, of course your car transmits the bumps a lot more than a luxury or sports car with a stiff-@$$ chassis! Subframe connectors would help a lot.

I was riding with my friend in his '02 Altima and he approached one of these bad RR crossings (the ones that feel awful going at 10 MPH in my Max) and didn't slow down, I almost freaked out and then we hit the tracks and it was like nothing! LOL, can't beat a stiff chassis and soft suspension.

To people who switched from being lowered with spring/strut combo to real coilovers, is there a noticeable improvement over rough surfaces at the same ride height?

As every other New Yorker has already said-YES. Make that a Hell Yeah! Slow down-Heck almost every car - jalopy or pimped up- we all slow down over here. It's really that crazy in the city. Freakin landmines-if you didn't slow down it's cause you didn't see it and if your behind that car your like "Oh ****" and slow down.Lol

crappy houston streets + lowered car with lip kit...slow down? hell i come to a complete stop! i have to drive almost sideways over the speed bumps at school cause my exhaust hangs alittle low and hits.

I don't know if it is just ME or the fact that Chitown roads are horrible... but I thought the roads in Houston weren't too bad... the beltway is easy to get around, and I would certainly take Houston traffic over Chicago traffic.

But that's just me.

no, even when i had the max i didnt really slow down over them. but now in the titan i dont even bother to lift off the throttle. certian tracks i mash on it and yes the titan will jump a little. its a 4X4 its what its made for.




and yes it really pisses me off when people in front of me are driving trucks or suv's and they slow WAY down to go over bumps/tracks

RELAX!

It will mess up the suspension on ANY vehicle if the tracks are bad enough, whether SUV or other... and if an SUV is slowing down to cross, sure thing that a Maxima (especially if you have a drop) BETTER slow down.

funny, I actually speed up and put in netral, and let the tires wiggle but only in one cross road where it is actually safe to do so.... there are other in whihc I do slow down...

i slow down everytime no matter what, can't risk anything. just recently some 16 year old kid near where i live, went over the railroad tracks really fast, got air and smashed into a pole..like 2 kids died in his car.not worth it

The latest thing around here is the "tabletop speed bumps". These are speed bumps that have a flat top on them that are 4 to 6 feet from start to finish. The speed limit sign beside they says 15mph and if you do not exceed that in a normal car, they are not to bad.
