Local machine shop I deal with told me they can re-sleeve my VQ35 for bout 700 bux with overbore to 4". You end up with a 4.0L motor for bout 3200 dollars. You can control VTCs via HKS injector controller...

I wanna see this done.... hopefully my sleeved motor will be done before and I can show pics of it instead of just rambling bout it.
I'd prefer Travis' method since you get to keep the stock VQ35 block and don't need to send it anywhere. It's the boring out that's the most expensive. His method would only call for a prepped, brand new VQ40 crank and same diameter, higher compression pistons.

What would be the compression ratio if we kept the original VQ35 pistons in the VQ35 block, but with the VQ40 crank?

Have you already started this project, or is it still in the planning stage? If you have started, update please and/or pics!!!

back at it again eh Trav, sounds like a sweet project.

I'm confident in Travis work. Hes made some pretty sweet projects in the past and people doubted them all. But hes managed a sqr23det build and a vq sentra (hes building my kit right now). I'd like to see this pulled off, either way its an intersting and informative thread

You'd think it'd be a relatively low compression motor if he's putting a turbo in it.

I haven't had time to start on it.. I've got a TON of other projects going on, that's taking most of my time right now. Frosty's car is going together in the next few weeks.. which will be a sleeved/built, big bore VQ, at around 4 liters. We're going to be running a Turbonetics T70/P-trim, on a custom schedule 40 stainless TIG welded Y-pipe. We're also running a Electromotive TEC III with 72lb injectors and twin Walbro 255lph pumps.. that should give you an idea of the power levels we're shooting for.

Hope you built the tranny.

yeah, frosty had told me a little bit about what you are doing to his car. There's no doubt about you from my end. you got my full support.

I can't wait till frosty's car gets done. from what I heard, frosty's setup will topple mardi's setup with ease. just you all wait. travis is the man...

and GBAUER, he's getting a cryo-treated and reinforced tranny for frosty in his snowmobile. no worries...

Let's just say that I have a great deal of faith in the 6spd gearbox, with certain mods done to it..

I've been telling everyone that it's stronger than the old 5 speed. And with a few metalurgy tweaks and some shock proof, it'll go a long way.

hope so. I've seen them cyro'd and still fried over here in MD. Corey (redmax) had a "beefed up" tranny in his TC'd 4th gen and I watched it loose gears on the track. I know the 6th speed is better, but you're also adding a lot of power to it. You may want to consider straight cut gears instead of helical cut as the tranny case / bearings are now the weak point. straight cut keeps the trust to a min. just my .02 (I'll be doing the same and have already researched it )

regardless, I'm watching this one closely as well. If you get it to work right, how much for a "crate motor" with your mods done to it? We'll take the motor and add all the goodies to make it really move!

agreed, but still has the thrust problems for the shafting. The axial loading at 500+ crank hp is rediculous!

Yeah, we've been running them in our turbocharged Spec V's for years, with no problems.

I was putting out over 300whp on the 6spd tranny in a spec and even using slicks all the time never hurt the tranny.

I say that now, but i've never looked in the tranny either. Im sure those 3rd gear 6000rpm miss shifts must have done wonders to the synchros.

sorry for the newb question, but what is helical cut gears etc...

300 whp equates to roughly 350-375 crank hp in the 6th speed. It wouldn't have had a problem with that. With what he's doing, he will probably be 400-500 whp. That's a whole different game.

Helical cut gears are what's used in almost every production car because they are quieter. Straight cut gears are for race cars because they are stronger. The difference is that in straight cut gears, the teeth are 90 degrees to the face. Helical have an angle to them.
