Lined up at a light with a new Impala today. I'm waiting at the light and next to me pulls a black impala. Probably had exhaust. I could hear a throaty burble when he moved up. His lane had a garbage truck up a block and he was inching. I knew what he wanted to do. Light turns and he probably gives it more than half throttle. I start late to make sure he wants some. I was already in 1st gear waiting for him. He gets his back doors to my bumper before I go. Wind out first gear and I'm a wheel ahead of him now. He then shuts down and hits the brakes. He knew there was no way he was going to pass me before smacking into the garbage truck. Hehe. I got to the end of the block and made a right while be speed down the street going straight. Hehe. We only went at it for about 5 seconds. I know he went WOT when he saw me comming up. If it went on I'm sure I would have walked him easy. I wonder what he was thinking when he heard my intake and y-pipe in his ear next to him... Probably.. Crap.. This isn't supposed to happen. 3.0 V6=1, 3.8 V6=0
I still don't know how you can only extract 200hp from a 3.8 liter. Boggles the mind.

They should be ashamed to put "Impala" on that POS.

True....true. My best friend bought a brand new 2000 Monte Carlo SS back in about July. I like the car, but, that 3.8 which delivers a whopping 200hp is such a joke. Plus, that car weighs about 8 tons. He hasn't/won't race me. He's got about 5500 miles on the car & is pulling a JimW, "I want to wait until its completely broken in" on me. (oops, did i just say that - you should be happy woody) :) He's been in and driven my car & knows that I'll wipe up the concrete with his heavy, underpowered butt.

Isn't the Viper engine designed by a Japanese guy? True? No? If so.. they probably told him to think american.. I dono.. hehe..

Booker: Your 5-speed would kill him easy. You should have seen how fast I pulled on this guy. He went WOT and I just kept gaining on him. It really shouldn't have the impala name. I'm scared of those older ones. They are bad ***.. I wouldn't mind having one.. =)

impalas

You're right to be cautious of older impalas, like from a few years back. Those things are quick! My friends dad has one, and man will it roll. Handles like a turd on jello, but kills my max up to about the beginning of third gear. BTW, speaking of pos, some jackss tried to run me earlier in a CORSICA! He was about 1.5 lengts ahead of me before i even realized that this was actually happening! About 4 secs later he was about 5 lengths in back of me. What a schmuck!

no

nobody said otherwise..

The thing that gets me most about the 2K impala's is how ugly they are ... dam the rear end is nasty on those POS's
i've been accustomed to expect american sedans / coupes to be slow but at least make it look good...

BTW: nice run Zum

A 5sp Max is faster than the older Impalas (stock anyway). It'll probably beat an auto Max. I think they did 0-60 mph in the mid-7 sec range.

Re: no

The rear of the new impala looks like it was designed by a kid! "Ummm, let me draw four circles". Eeew. Its not too bad in the front. But I see the new impala and just go.. HA junk. Where as the older ones. I see them and go.. "Now thats one baaaaaad ****". How about the new Stratus R/Ts. Those things look ugly too. But I wonder if they are fast.

Our VQs use a high compression, 10:1. Those big GM and Ford V6s are probably running no more than 8:1. That why they can get away with using 87 octane gas...while we should use 92+.

Well, I know why its low HP. And its probably more like 9.0:1. But why would anyone settle for that. Thats what boggles my mind. I guess they don't want to play the HP/Displacement game.

I played with one of those older Impalas -- Caprices on steroids -- a couple years ago in my '96 Max. He tried desperately to lose me but couldn't, and I think he was real suprised at that. We were on curvy/hilly streets, not much traffic, not really high speeds (so I expected his big cubes to out-accelerate me), but he just couldn't shake me.
