Auto tranny prob in 2nd gen

Here's the story behind my car.......
It's an 85 maxima that i bought for $200 and everything works, except it will not shift out of 1st gear. It won't shift out of 1st, and I have L1, just no L2. And Reverse works. The speedo and odometer dont work either, and I think it has to do with the tranny. Anyone else had this prob? My uncle was thinking it might be the governor, but I dunno. Any suggestions? Please comment!

I'm not familiar with the 85 model, but what are the chances that the tranny controller needs to know the vehicle speed in order to determin shift points????

In other words, your speedo problem might be causing the tranny to stay in 1st.
See if there is a speed sensor in that car or maybe it's just a cable.
Get a shop manual for that vehicle as well.

There is a forum for your 2nd gen Maxima on here. http://forums.maxima.org/forumdisplay.php?f=23

2nd gens don't have speed sensors (unless it's a GL or GXE with digital dash...which then the sensor is in the instrument cluster) nor are the electronically controlled. In fact the only electronic portion is the overdrive.
