WHP is horsepower measured at the wheels by a chassis dyno. BHP is brake HP made by the engine without the loss that occurs from rotating the transmission, alternator, water pump, and other external things (parts that aren't part of the engine itself). WHP is always less than BHP because it takes horsepower to rotate those things I mentioned above. both of them are real horsepower.

LOL. But yeah I guess it can get confusing to see "whp" thrown around when you don't know the definition.

Neal always gives articulate, easy-to-understand answers.

yeah, i just thought i'd add that nealoc does seem to answer in a very polite respectable manner which i appreciate.
the sarcasm and talking-down gets really annoying to read on these forums.
so thanks neal.
and +1 for howstuffworks.com for learning basic stuff.

WHP is not the same as engine HP you see listed on specs. WHP is the horsepower you are actually putting on the ground. this is what really matters when dealing with how fast you want to go. that is why you need to do a dyno run to get this number.

generally a car's HP differs from on to another, even if they are the same car. this is more true as the car ages and owners maintain them differently. all cars slowly lose power as they get more used. also many new cars tested never match up to what the factory specs were. (some manufacturers are more honest than others)

HP is just another spec. does not mean your car is fast because it has lots of HP. torque is a huge aspect. and others like weight, drivetrain, etc... all factor in

after you've checked out what WHP and BHP is, and get a hang for it, you'll also learn that some companies advertised HP are close to the WHP making you even more confused.
a classic example was the famous LS1 motor in the 98+ Z28. advertised HP was 305....but people were seeing anywhere between 290 to 310 RWHP making it impossible for the motor to pack 305 when clearly it was closer to approx. 340 BHP.
03-04 Cobras are another example as well as SRT-4 neons.
my guess would be for insurance purposes, backdoor D.O.T. deals and politics.
