well you have the hose, you need a container to put the gas in. Put the hose in the tank and suck on the other end. NOTE you may get gas in your mouth if your not careful. The trick is to get the gas up and out of the tank and headed down hill to your container, once the gas is moving it will do the job from there. Make sure that you keep the tank line under the gas in the tank.

Well you see if you go to advance autoparts we these nifty little tools right. Well it's a two ended hose with a hand pump for like five bucks and all it does is
syphon gas out of tanks for you.

Hey

Ahh come on, pumping it out with a hand pump is no fun. I had to syphen the gas out of my motorcycle the old way. Gasoline doesnt taste that bad actually it doesnt taste like anything. Make sure if you do get gas in your mouth, spit it out and then get a breath mint preferablly a couple altoids should do the trick.

Good Luck

You guys are nuts.. I'd never syphon with my mouth...

An easy way to do it...

put your finger over the end of the hose(out of the tank).. pull up on the hose a little (the end in the tank)

uncover the end that your finger is holding closed (out of the tank).. and push down quickly on the hose.. (the end in the tank)..

Do this rapidly for about 10 seconds.. then, quickly hold the uncovered hose-end at the ground outside the car.. the fuel should begin to flow out. The way it works.. is by making a suction (while your finger is over the hole).. and no suction when you uncover the hole.. if you do it fast enough.. and you don't pull the hose completely out of the fuel in the tank while doing it.. it works just fine.

Just like everyone else I’m ganna present my method:

1. get a bucket which is lower than the lowest point of you gas tank
2. stick the hose into the gas tank
3. suck gasoline out with your mouth until the hose gets completely filled with gasoline. Don’t worry about getting gasoline in you mouth, unleaded fuel is not harmful. Just wash you mouth in case it actually happens.
4. close the tip of the hose with you finger and put it down in the bucket
5. After you open up the tip all the fuel will come out in the bucket.

You could also try filling the tube with gasoline first. Then plug one end with your finger and hold it near the bottom of your bucket. Stick the other end of the tube into your gas tank as far as it will go. Release your finger from the end in the bucket and watch the siphon go. The gasoline that you originally put into the tube will flow out, creating suction that draws the rest of the gasoline out of your tank. As mentioned before, make sure the outlet end of your tube is lower than your intake end. If that doesn't work and you can't find a hand pump, I'd suggest just driving your car until it's dry.

Sorry if I missed it, but why do you have to emtpy your gas tank when replacing the fuel pump?

Or get a clear hose, when you see the fuel coming, quit sucken...

I have never seen anyone die from sucken gas (OK one time, however the fool was smoking at the same time) and I grew up during the 70's gas crisis when it was a daily occurance. And a way of life...

My tank usually drains as I drive it around....

You don't have to drain the tank to take out your pump. Take out the back seat and you'll see what you need to do from there. Not a tough job and you can keep your mouth minty fresh while you do it!

Wal-mart sells electric (2 D batteries) siphoners for about 5 bucks. They're slow but they work good.

Um, why not just use a clear hose and suck STANDING UP until the gas is a few inches away from your lips?

If you are standing up, gravity is working in your favor (at least, to keep you from swallowing gas) since it's not going to flow out.

Now that you have the tube almost full of gas, bend the part by your mouth in half so that the air is cut off and it doesn't flow back down the tube. Now just put it in the bucket and let the gas flow out.

It's the same principle behind draining large fish tanks except it's a little easier with tanks since you can fill the tube up by putting it int he tank first.

Actually... those tubes would work best. They are clear and easy to bend. You can get one from your local pet store for less than $5.

all this sucking just to replace a fuel pump . . .

Just run your tank pretty low (atleast 1/4 left) and then change the fuel pump

No need to blow your car just to change the fuel pump
