Innovative Exhaust Concepts

I am starting this thread to allow the more ingenius of our members to divulge some exhaust tricks to the rest of the information-seeking populus of the .org. That includes but is not limited to, electronic cutouts, glasspack resonators and mufflers, dual exhausts etc...

My contribution to this post shall be an idea of my own creation... I'm sure you're all familiar with the over-hyped, mismarketed Tornado "vortex generator". We all damn well know that if you put that stupid thing in your intake piping it is going to create more volume restriction than "vortex generation". But consider this; if most exhaust problems are caused by high velocity air turbulence, why hasnt anyone tried installing one of these swirlers in their y-pipe flex section? I bet you it will get rid of any bees in the can.

Probably because everyone is trying to increase exhaust velocities, not reduce them.

What does this have to do with Stone Racing headers?

btw, did you buy one by chance?

Where are Stone Racing headers mentioned?

Lets not sabotage this thread before it gets started. Opinions are expected but dont post unless you have something MEANINGFUL to contribute.

Had this idea a little while ago. Thats an electric cutoff after the y, opening up the exhaust. The idea was that you cruise, you had a nice quiet deep classy looking exhaust(dual resonators and borla mufflers) and when you were at the track, you open up the exhaust at the cutoff and free some power. Of course after considering the power/price ratio, its not worth it, but it would be very nice to be able to go from a race car sound to a quiet high performance cruiser with the flick of a switch.

Oh and BTW, im aware that somebody probably already thought of this.

In that system, dual resonators would be WAY overkill. Just put one in the straight section of the custom b-pipe, rather than having one on each branch going to the mufflers. I'm also not so sure there's room for 2.

Did you have any Borla muffler with a custom B pipe on your car before? If you have, you would understand that its not overkill to have 2 resonators in that system. I had a single borla exhaust on my old car with one resonator, and the sound wasnt quiet. It was nice, but sometimes droning, and I don't want much droning. 2 resonators would make it quiet, close to stock, but with a small hint of aftermarket. Room is an issue, but it's definatly possible if you cut out the spare tire well.

exhaust cutout

I am using an electric cutout in my exhaust system. It's in line just after a resonator immediately after the cat. It dumps out the passenger side with a small glass pack. We had to cut out the rear passenger floor board to make room.
The system is quiet enough to mask any droning when closed but sounds great when opened.
When we dynoed at JWT the horsepower increased by 19 1/2 with the cutoff fully opened.
