Removing Paint

I have what I hope to be a pretty simple question to answer: how would I go about removing the paint on my painted center console? To give you some background, it has 2 completely different layers of paint on it (changed colors) and the bottom one is mostly gone from some light sanding. The top layer is an acrylic lacquer paint, if that helps.

I hate to just go and buy something to take it off, though, and it not be safe for the plastic underneath.

i'd be worried that something abrasive enough to remove that paint would damage the plastic. i'd hunt and peck for a new piece if you're just trying to go back to original

That's what I've been doing, but I wanted to try and salvage some of the harder-to-find parts rather than paying out my *** for them.

I doubt there is going to be anything strong enough to remove the paint with out damaging the plastic. Maybe try to find a paint that matches the original color?

Ehh that's just it. I'm sick of painting. It never quite turns out right. I wanted an OEM look.

Oh well

Well this is a trick from my guitar painting phase, Try using Aircraft Stripper on a small piece you know you're replacing, test the effect, and if it works as intended go ahead. Aircraft stripper is strong enough to remove the clear, paint, AND polyurethane on a wooden guitar... id figure it works on spray paint. we can talk later, but its an idea

The lines on it "now" (scratches) are practically invisible in person. It looks OEM.

Anyone care to guess the process and tools I used?
