Hey this is just a random question I have been wanting to have answered. My friend has a 96 Accord w/ a V-tec. Is there a difference between a V-tec & a V6? If so what is the difference?

I think your are confused. You can have a 4 cyl. V-Tech, or a V6 V-tech. "V-tech" though others have similar technology named different things, is Honda/Acura only and has nothing to do with engine size. What it means is that the engine can switch over at high RPM to a higher cam spec for more top end. For example Toyata has VVTI Variable Valve and Timing with Intelligence.

Your friends car is simply a V6 with an extra feature to help it perform better at the top end, and still get good gas mpg.

a V6 = six cylinder engine, with the cylinders arranged in a "V" (two rows of three joined at an angle @ the crank.)

V-tec: Variable valve Timing Electronically Controlled.

It is honda's trick (and trademark) valve timing system. I won't go into how it works, but basically at a certain rpm (for example, I think it's 6500 in the Integra Type-R), the engine switches cam profiles from a milder, low to mid-rpm cam (optimized for torque), to a wilder, high-rpm cam, for better breathing and higher horsepower. This system obviously allows the best of both worlds: Optimum high-end power, with great driveability and mileage.

Your friend has an Accord EX. It is an I-4. The V-6 in that generation didn't have V-TEC. That thing has 145 hp and 147 lb-ft of tq. You have 160 hp and ? tq. Those things can move when V-TEC kicks in. If he also has a 5-speed then the race will be kinda close but I think that Nissan power will win.

Uhh...

Don't be stupid.

VTEC is a technology used to increase power from an engine.

V6 is just a configuration (# of cylinders) of an engine. Configuration of an engine vs. the technology applied to an engine IS A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT THING.

A V6 does not necessarily have to have any form of VTEC. Neither does an I4, V8, or anything else. Your friend's 4banger accord with VTEC makes more power than a 4banger accord without VTEC, but not a whole lot more.

If your Maxima is an automatic and your friend is a 5-speed, the race will be close. Automatic vs. Automatic you should win, if your Maxima is a 5-speed and your friend is a 5-speed again it depends on driver skill- you will have an advantage, but it will still be possible to screw it up.

First off is asking an opinion being stupid.........that's what I thought. Next, I have a 5sp & he has an automatic. He keeps telling me he has V-tech not a V6

He has a Honda and doesn't even know what it means? Don't even bother to race him. Like these guys said, the "VTEC" is mainly produced for variable ignition timimg. The VTEC technology can be added to any engine Honda wants to add it to. It's not an engine type.

you will kill him

the race wont even be close... you will destroy him. an auto vtec accord is a high 16/low 17 second car. my friend had a 95 accord ex (I-4 VTEC) and he ran 16.4s with 5-speed, intake, header, exhaust, and tuned apex'i V-AFC (which does basically nothing for a car that has just the basic bolt ons.)

I have an Auto VG.....

heres how I see it.....

since I'm an auto, 5spd Accords are close, but they come to my front door in the higher speeds, so I can't really pull them. so 5spd VG v. 5spd Accord, I'd say goes to the 5spd VG. as for the auto Accords, I take them by a car length at least so a 5spd VG will take them even more! but if you have a VG, don't sleep on some of the 5spd Accords Exs, with a good driver, they can be very impressive for a 140hp 4-cylinder.
but unless you can't drive, you should be able to take the Accord....I also remember reading somewhere that high revving is the key to "succesfully" utilizing V-tec and since most guys don't seem to do this, that is why some of them are always losing races!
