The Japanese automaker will also unveil its redesigned flagship Maxima in New York.

From Edmunds:

The Japanese automaker will also unveil its redesigned flagship Maxima in New York. The Maxima features a redesigned exterior with a new front grille and revised hood, headlights, front and rear bumpers, side sills and wheels, along with a new interior and revised instrument panel. The company said its Xtronic CVT transmission is now standard on all models.

Looks like the 6G is shaping up to be the shortest Maxima generation on record.

I like it a bit more than the 6g. It looks more Teana-ish. More sporty.

6th generation Maxima:
2004
2005
2006
--------
3 years (Assuming the one being 'debuted' at the NY Auto Show is a 2007 model and not just a refreshed 6G.) If it is a refreshed 6G, it seems that it'll be noteably different than the 04-06 models; unlike the 4G and 5G which were only VERY slightly updated (appearancewise) for the 1997 and 2002 model years respectively. (Both were definitely instances where Nissan debuted a Maxima that required little if any styling changes throughout its generational lifecycle.)

Looks the exact same as a 6G to me

DIFFERENCES, HEADLIGHT SHAPE AND A SPOILER, WOOOO WHAT A BOAT it LOOKS to be the same size as the 6th Gen, as far as I'm concerned this WILL BE a 6th Gen, its not that significant of a change to be named the "7th Gen" Maxima.

If you wanna be a "front runner" and turn away from an auto company just because they put out an ugly car then why own a Nissan at all? Get a friggen grip, all automobile manufacturers have their rises and falls..I mean look at the 1st and 2nd Gen Maximas..they've only gotten better, they rise and fall just like every other company.

6.5gen

CVT will be nice, as long as they keep 6spd as an option.

yeah, this is not the 7th gen maxima, like Kevlo said this would technically be a 6.5 gen, but they dont seem to be changing the motor, just making cosmetic changes aside from the transmission.

It's the 6.5g you n00bs. The 6th gen took the same change into the 6.5gen as the 5>5.5gen.

Well that would rule out an 07+ Maxima for me. I do NOT want a CVT, and from what I've read the Murano guys (murano site, and CR data on Murano trannys) are having lots of fun replacing those because they do not hold up.

How is that being a "front runner?"
I'd be loyal to Nissan if they didn't keep on making uglier and uglier cars. At this rate, the next car will not be a Nissan....If I'm getting a land-boat, I'll get a good-looking one from BMW, Acura, or Audi next time.

CVT sucks....my buddy's Civic has had it's CVT replaced 6 times now. 6 TIMES! And that's with Honda quality - doesn't bode well for Nissan. Even if it was reliable, driving a CVT car is even less fun than driving an automatic

And the 5 gen went to the "5.5 gen" because they changed the tranny AND engine. This monstrosity shown here is hardly a big change from the current 6G.....and just as ugly.

youre right, they started making nissans that go faster and be more fun than ever before. we call that a fake maxima because before 1996, all maximas were SLOW. it couldnt be a maxima after 1995 because they became quick.

Yeah, link is dead.

But this is far from 5 - 5.5 gen, the 5.5 gen had a huge engine and tranny overhaul, in addition to adding HIDs. This is just a little facelift. This is like the 97-99 of the 4th gens. If they had a VQ40 in there or something then maybe it would warrant a half generation, but they don't (sorry, but a CVT doesn't count ). It's just a facelift.

Yes, CVTs are cool on paper but incredibly boring to drive, and make your car feel like the titanic or something, you mash the gas pedal, it changes a little light in the engine bay, a bunch of miniature workers shovel a bunch more coal into your engine and then slowly the heat rises and you start accelerating. Except, you know, with a VQ. Which means that it would kill the car, period.

You're both being incredibly stupid. The '95 is still a 4th gen, you make it sound like it's a 3rd gen or something. It's the fastest of the 4th gens, at that, for god's sake.

Here's what Uncle Carlos states (direct quote):
As the Versa, new Sentra and, later this year, new Quest, new Maxima and all-new Altima designs demonstrate, Nissan will be very aggressive in keeping its products fresh and innovative. People turn to Nissan for products that enrich their lives in newer, better ways, and these new models fulfill that need and that promise. - Carlos Ghosn 1/9/06
LINK

As the Versa is a totally new vehicle and the Sentra and Altima WILL be totally new cars, a cogent argument can be made that Carlos is referring to a new 7G (thus the 'new Maxima' terminology) rather than an updated 6G (6.5G?).

I think you're reading into the terminology a bit too much and taking it too literally. There is marketing buzz words in there and even if a car is just updated they'll still call it "new" to generate hype and sales. The Quest is "updated" (a lot) but it's not "all new" yet. He used the same "new" terminology for the Maxima which is in the same boat, and I think we're looking at a 6.1G, not a "7G". The "all-new" Altima is a full redesign for sure.

If it's really getting a CVT (God I hope not) then I will definitely not be buying the new/updated Max. May try to get a closeout '06, that is, if I decide on getting another Maxima.

hey, I resent that. i love my 2nd gen. It is not as good looking as the later gens, but it can hardly be equated to a fall or low point of the maxima line. It was the 80's for gods sake, did you expect them to look like a car nowadays? It was not a bad look for the time, in fact it looked better than other cars of those same years.

BTW it also had a few things that set it apart from the rest and it was the first maxima to have rear disc brakes(which some later generation maximas didn't even have (not sure about 4th gen and later though)), automatic volume control on the stock stereo, "automatic" climate control, keyless entry system (although quite unreliable), also the first maxima with a V6(correct me if I left anything else out). It was the car on which they tested all these features to see if it was viable later. So I really don't think it is a lowpoint at all.

the 2nd gen i had had many more features than my 4th gen... or any 4th gen for that matter

It can't be worse that the crime against humanity that is the 4th/5th gen 5spd which likes to eat differential bearings and which has a pos 5th gear which is shorter than an albino midget.

The 6th gen really isn't that much different than the 4th and 5th gens. They are all built on the same platform.
