Why the hump?

Considering the Max has no propshaft, being FWD, why is there a bloody stupid 'transmission hump' slap in the middle of the floor, in the rear?
If it is just for stiffening, I'd love to take the cutting tools to it, braze a flat section in, and add a piece of 3x3 square section tubing UNDER the car to replace it.

well the exhaust goes down that section, so welding flat wouldnt work. plus then you would need new/ to cut your carpet for it to fit right.

The Maxima was originally designed as a RWD car.

me and my father argued for 5 minutes about how my car was NOT rwd because of this stupid hump. most cars seem to have it, i thought. its so common that didnt the previous gen civic advertise its flat rear floor, since it was "innovative"? i wouldnt go to the extreme of making the floor flat, but i was always wondering the same thing.

I had no idea your maxima had a prop... I could have sworn that was the DRIVEshaft hump for RWD cars. The hump is there for exhaust routing. That way the bottom is more flat, so the people you run over dont get burned by the hot exhaust pipes. Or its possibly up so it doesnt get bent when you hit a speed bump.

on my car the exhaust is completely above the flat part of the car. The only part of the system that hits the ground is the rear tips.

This can't be a serious question.

Please, look under your car and tell us what you see.
