$50 paint job....

a $50 paint job WITH A ROLLER..

Sounds ridiculous right, before posting any obvious comments. read the thread below from moparts forum. The results are pretty amazing for paint that was put on w/ a roller and only cost $50

http://board.moparts.org/ubbthreads/...0&fpart=1&vc=1

I wont be trying this on the maxima anytime soon, but I have a work truck w/ lots of repaired body rust and a few mis-colored panels that will be getting this paint job w/ in the next month.
I ran out of $$ buying painting equipment and at this time just don’t have the money to spring for a supplied air system so I cant shoot urethane, like I originally planed. So for the price this is perfect for that truck, if it comes out well maybe the maxima will get one as well

If that paint was applied with a roller, it looks darn good.

That's pretty sick. I'd like to know how he got the idea for it. Also, he didn't say anything about a clear coat, so it's even more amazing that the paint looks that good.

I've been keeping up with this thread for a while but didnt want to bring it on the org until better results came up. A lot of people were having issues with the mixture because it was wrong, it would either run and bubble up too much or the paint would still be soft after a week or so. There was another thread on zilvias or drift something where some of those guys started doing it. There was a white hatch civic that turned out pretty well. I might try this on my mountain bike.

Ive also been reading that thread, he claims the paint should not be shaken when purchased, it has to be hand stirred to avoid the bubbles.
For the price, it looks really good.

yea the thread is a monster, 43 pages, i finaly got through the whole thing. towards the end there are a few successful attempt at doing this, some who had trouble, but all had zero auto painting experiance, all in all it sounds like a very managable task, def going to give this a try on my truck.

I hope you guys realize how much work/time there is in sanding

I'd rather spray, then again I already have the equipment

i agree. the real difference in price between using the roller and spray gun is actually below $500 for a complete paint job, which is the cost of the paint, primer, and clearcoat. sanding process will be the same and it's unavoidable either way. i just got my car painted a week ago. i have estimated a total of 12 hours straight i've spent in wet sanding.

I saw that awhile back too. Never really could see the pictures though, IIRC. Oh well. Definately not bad for the money.

Results are damn good for $50. This is a good for a beater car or old car that needs paint but not what it would cost for one at a shop.

Real quick for those who don't want to read the whole thread; this is from the guy who originally started the rolled on paint job:

But you have to take into account the tools needed for a proper and SAFE spray job as well, a couple guns, compressor capable of powering them, a decently ventilated garage, respirators, etc. And your still bound to get a pile of dust and orange peel, which requires a good scuff and buff. This is a really an easy, low-buck way to get a *decent* looking car. Go look around a parking lot sometime, you'd be amazed how many cars have actually terrible paintjobs, both OEM and repaints.

This is pretty hot, I like the results this produces. What about poly uerothane parts such as the front bumper that would need some flex agent mixed in to prevent cracking?

I've always loved semi-matte paint jobs. I would almost rather paint my next car like this because of the finished result. The $50 price tag is just a bonus!

It looks like crap

same with the Charger. Sure, it looks "ok" from far away, but if that was painted correctly the paint itself and the reflection would both be much much deeper.

Don't get me wrong I'm amazed they look as good as they do, but get within 5 feet of the cars and they won't exactly scream at you....

The way I see it if you are going to put as much time as he has into it you might as well do it the right way.

then again I'm not really one for doing things the ghetto way

I agree with you, but its almost as pricey to prep a car as it is to paint. This is an nice and in expensive method in that perspective. I would do this method for a beater car, or something of that nature.

If I was repaiting the Max I wouldnt take this route, after all the hours of sanding, prepping, bondo etc, Its getting paint shot in the proper way.

Same here but I would def. do this to a beater car or my ghetto mt bike. The max, hell no, unless the max was my beater car.
