Why are Nissan oil filters so small?

I never understood why Nissan made such small oil filters for their cars. Comparing the 9E000 filter to a Mazda6 3.0 filter, the Mazda filter is huge! My rommies' 2.3CL has the same sized filter as my car! And a filter is a filter, so I don't think Nissan can produce a super advanced filter. Then why not use a bigger one? Lack of need? Cost cutting? Ideas?

because back in 95 when the VQ line came out, Nissan was brilliant meng. They had a time machine that told them a little over 10 yrs from that time, a guy called JClaw would make traction bars, but they would sit close to the oil filter! So the engineers went to work on their oil filter design and made it shorter... they almost got it right, missed it by about 3/4" too long still... LoLeRz

On a serious note though, filter size has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with filtering capability. If you had 2 filters, one was a normal size Mobil 1 oil filter, the other was a large Fram-knock off Advance Auto Parts filter, which filter would ou rather put on your motor???

Bottom line, our cars are not domestic (Mazda= Ford left overs). Our cars dont make up for inferior efficiency and workmanship by making everything bigger.

I believe that when the filters got smaller, the paper inside became denser so the filtering capacity is the same. There was an article about this called "the incredible shrinking oil filter" in which someone cut them all apart to see what was inside...

After I completed my AutoRX rinse phase in February, my friend and I took a hack saw to my oil filter to check out what was suspended in the filter media. My friend, who is quite mechanically inclined, was impressed by the makeup of the filter once it was opened up and I was impressed by the amount of crud/particles trapped in the filter media.

Don't sweat the small stuff! The size of the Nissan OEM filter is irrelevant as it works just fine.

I go with the larger oem filter, esspecialy if you're on the highway a lot, since the pressure at higher RPMs is greater you don't want the bypass opening up prematurely as the filter ages/clogs up. the 9E000 is the "bigger" one I think (compared with the 65F00)

So what is the benefit to a larger filter? My simple mind is telling me that (provided the media is of the same type as the smaller filter) that it could possibly extend your oil change interval because it can trap more crap. Anything else?

And to Lost's point, if you run a larger filter, but in turn use more oil as I believe some folks are doing, wouldn't the increased pressure still be an issue?

For people who use their car as a grocery getter, this discussion is meaningless!

But, for guys who drive their cars fast and furious the more oil you have in the system the better for your motor! Why do you suppose they sell aftermarket oil pans ??
