Regular or Premium Gas for 06 Max?

I have a question.

I've read and heard that if you put regular unleaded gas in your 06 Max it can make your engine tick and it's not good for the car. Is that true?

When I bought the car the sales person told me that you can put regular, but it will drop the HP down to 255.

So the question is, can I get away with putting regular unleaded in my car without causing any damage?

Just use premium... don't mess around. It's really not that much more anyway. $5 for a whole tank maybe.

Considering that 6th gens have 255HP (new SAE regulations for the win) in the first place...yeah, your salesman is an idiot. Run premium.

You don't have to run premium. Does it really matter if you only make 245 instead of 255 on a regular basis? Probably not. The computer has zero problems running 87 or 89 octane. Knocking is not usually an issue with a new vehicle unless it is only made to run premium. The maxima is not made to only run premium. You get the best performance out of the highest octane but everyone knows that. For everyday use 89 is fine.

For the extra 5.00 why run the engine on a lower octane? Just because you cant hear ping/knock/predetonation/etc doesnt mean its not there. If you spend the $$ for the new max then you would have to be a retard to be cheap on the gas.

Retard to be cheap on gas, ok.

My question is did you buy or lease this car? If you leased it, who cares, do what you want. Put it this way, I've never put premium in a rental car.

If you bought it, do some more homework and make up your own mind. I can tell you there are a lot of urban legends when it comes to what premium can and cannot do. Some people actually think there is more "power" in a gallon of premium. They don't know what AKI is. Predetonation is too many syllables. They think that there are tiny mpg's in premium too and you will get better mileage. In this dept., I say do what makes you comfortable. But premium is dirt cheap nowadays, 3.149 for regular, and 3.349 for premium. Again, the artificial 20 cents. And of course, as the CEO of Gulf Oil said, many people don't realize they don't make a lot of money when gas is expensive. Even his wife didn't know that. yeah, right!

AKI is the anti knock index. Rather than type out a whole writeup of my own, im going to link the OP to this one, that is pretty imformative and will help him make up his own mind.

Thanks for the link. It was really helpful and it helped me understand the difference between the fuels.

I don't consider myself a retard for asking this question. It was a simple question that I wanted to know an answer for.

I just wanted to know what the difference was between the two fuels and if what I heard was true. That's all I wanted to know...

Am I going to put cheap gas in my car? No, but I needed some clarification on what I read and heard.

I always run premium in my car and its a '96. If it was an '06 i wouldnt even think about putting less than 93 octane in my car.

Yea it pretty much works itsself out. Theres alot of urban legend and the ike that revolves around octane, fuel, etc. Most of it is spawned by people that dont take the time to research and learn and then speak it to people who honestly dont know as if it were the truth.

3rd to 5th Gen owners shouldn't suggest what gas 6th Gen owners should use...

the owners manual on the 6th Gen says they can use 87 Octane while all other manuals have said 93 .. maybe their ECU's have timing retarded to compensate for 87..

trust me.. i lost this argument to someone else based on prior manual's

93 all the way. I used to have a jeep and it was made to run on low octane...BS. When you want to step on it, you will quickly see how the engine responds to different fuels.

For me its PREMIUM ONLY.

I normally switch between Premium and mid grade. I actually get less MPG (all city driving) while using Premium in my '05.

Hmm, that's interesting.

On older cars it is just as hard on the rings to run premium in an 87 octane car than it is to run 93 in an 87 rated car. It's good to see that our engineering in motors are getting past the damage blow-by does to motors when not using the correct octane.

For my car:
93 = 27mpg
89 = 24.5 mpg
87 = ??? to scared to try it!
