i've read a lot about how you can clean the rust off of calipers and rotors. my rust isn't actaully on the rotors, but more on the innermost perpendicular cylinder that connects to the wheel. and for the calipers, they're just a very darkish, dirty color.

the method i've heard of is taking a wire brush and just scrubbing away. i have a few questions about this:

1) could you use a power drill and add the circular wire brush attachment?

2) should i use a liquid cleaner during the process?

3) is this safe for the calipers and rotors?

thanks!

i've already tried brake cleaner

i've tried at least 3 brands..and obviously, none of them got ANY of the rust off of my rotors and calipers. is it safe to use a drill with an wire brush bit? anyone?

ok i know exactly what you r talking about. my rotors and calipers were all dirty too. The best and safest way i think is to get some plumber's sandpaper, the good stuff on a roll. you can use that to do around the rotor hub, the circular part. also get a wire brush for the caliper and scrub away. Use brake cleaner everyone once and awhile to get a clean surface. make sure you paint all of that after you r done. use HIGH TEMP PAINT and like 3-4 coats of paint and like 2 clear top coats. I did this to mine and they still look absolutly mint. half the battle with brakes is the prep work. any questions IM me, dmbhalloween88

thanks

okay, i'll be sure to IM you when i see you.

anyway, do you think it would be safe to use the wire brush drill bit? couldn't just protect the rotor so it won't get scratched?

and when cleaning and painting the caliper, do i have to detach the caliper? it seems very hard to paint evenly without doing that. and what kind of paint do i use? with any old high temp paint work, or should i specifically go with caliper paint?

thanks!

I left the calipers on and used HIGH TEMP engine spray paint. it gets into the cracks and is quick to use and to set. I wouldn't use the wire brush, it doesn't take long at all with a hand brush and some good plumbers sandpaper. Just make sure you leave the car in N or the E brake off so you can twist the rotor slightly to get a good even coat all around. and USE LOTS OF COATS.

the rotor hub will rust.. duh. Unless they are nickel cadmium plated or well-painted, it'll keep rusting when it gets wet.
