Which Optima battery should I get?

Hello! I plan to buy a new Optima battery. So should I get the red or yellow for my 97 Max and why? Can anyone give me the part number also? Thanks!

Red top = power for harder starts with a lot of equipment (ie, off road vehicles).

Yellow top = deep cycle, useful for running accessories with the engine off (ie, 1000 W stereos at the drive-in).

If you plan to get aftermarket stereo with subs etc, I'd get the yellow. If not, get the red.

They are not "hip"; but they are very long lived (typically 1 ½ to 2 times the life expectancy of a regular lead/acid battery), totally sealed (no corrosion, ever), can be mounted anywhere and in any position (even upside down), and have tremendous deep cycle capability……………………….

OPTIMA YellowTop Benefits

* Dual Purpose starting and deep cycling.
* Lasts up to 2 times longer than other batteries.
* Constant performance quality keeping your battery running at the same level even as it's being discharged.
* More power in the initial 1, 3, 5, and 10 seconds of the starting process than comparably rated conventional lead acid batteries.
* Ideal for seasonal use, fully charged, it can sit unused for up to 12 months at room temperature (or below) and still start a car.
* 15 times more resistant to vibration than other batteries.
* Nonspillable and can mount in almost any position.

why yellow is better. i love mine. i can run the stereo for hours car starts right up. i have d34/78

One good benefit is Optima's are dry cells, which makes it good against vibration. They can be turned and shaken really good. Hard vibration over time can kill a regular battery. Optima's can be drained and charged multiple times and still perform like new.

I've had a high enough failure rate with Optima batteries that I will not use them on daily drivers anymore.

I had a red top for 2.9 years. Crapped out on me, but I got a brand new one with another 3 year warranty for no charge.

I often wonder how many "battery failures" are the result of the fact that most newer cars have constant current drains (ECU, alarm systems, keyless entry systems, audio systems that use battery power to hold station settings, clock time, etc.; cell phones, GPS systems, and so forth) that steadily draw down the battery and cause issues when the car sits for a bit (1-2 weeks), particularly in cold weather. My 97 has had a tendency to drain batteries when left to sit for over three weeks while I was out of the country on business. I ran an elaborate test sequence and determined that all of the battery drains were related to these items. When the car is driven every day, there was never a problem; only when it sat. I cured the problem by using a battery maintainer when the car sits, and the problem has never reoccured. My Porsche also has the same type of problem when it sits, but Porsche is up front about it and provides a maintainer as well as a notch in the bottom of the driver's door for the wires to run thru, and a lighter plug that remains "hot" when the ignition is off so you can plug in the maintainer, close the door and arm the alarm, and the battery is kept in perfect condition while the car sits out the winter.

The more electronic gear we add to these cars, the harder it is on the battery...................

^ Yup... I completely agree. I remember reading somewhere that it's a good idea to simply replace your battery every 3 years or so just to keep from having the "oh, crap, it's dead again" inconvenience. I intend to change my battery (probably to a auto parts store brand like Duralast) out whenever its warranty is nearing the end.

Most conventional batteries are made in the same factory with different labels slapped on them.

Good point. I just get whatever's cheapest with the CA's and CCA's I need... In the case of my 94 Camry, the best value was at Wal-Mart...

I bought this Battery through my work brand new and ever sence it keeps loosing its charge on a monthly basis, It also dies even sooner when it is cold out. thank good I live in a house that the driveway is on a slant because I have had to compression start my car twice just to get it running in the morning. Ever sence I put it in when I turn on any of my accessories all the lights dim and the more I turn on the darker they get untill I rev the car up. I have seen customers come back that have bought a optima and its giving them same problems. Optima wont replace them till they fail the load test which its major BS. Every time I charge it I test my alternator and its fine then I test the battery hopeing it will fail so I can get my money back. Now im buying a odessy, because I called there local dealer and they said if one of there batterys was doing this they would replace it no question asked.
