What brand and grade of gas do you put in your Maxima?
#55
93 - Sunoco & Mobil
I will never use Shell in my Maxima.
I got my injectors clogged the fist time I put it in.
The second time I used Shell my car ran like ****.
After I put it in the third and the final time, I got a bad misfire when I started it the next day.

Any lower, and a modern high compression engine will compensate (without knocking) by retarding timing. The VQ, for example, is one such engine with digital knock management. It won't ping if you feed it 86 octane, but you sure as heck aren't getting optimal performance out of the engine. Whether this is noticeable or worth the extra savings incurred by using a lower AKI/RON fuel, is up to the individual.

lol, makes you wonder how true the ratings are... unless you all test the octane before putting it in your cars, it could invalidate every argument this has caused.... and gas guy error might add to the problem.

Other "off the wall" brands are bought as "odd-lot" and sold through brokers and may be refined by a number of Petro companies.
A Good rule of Thumb is if it don't ping at 89 Octane you gain nothing by going higher, For the higher Octane gases Don't burn HOTTER just LONGER, as the octane increases they retard the burn as not to have predetonation, this becoomes a concern in higher compression engines.

Most people think that Octane is a performance rating, or some sign to how volatile the fuel will be. Like a 87 stick of dynamite is good, so a 95 stick would be better right? It works that way for grains of gun powder, but unfortunately, it doesn't work that way for fuel. Octane ratings are used to match the compression of your engine to a fuel that will burn the most completely. A higher octane fuel will not burn completely in a low compression engine. You actually lose performance. And, not only does higher octane fuel have higher resistance to detonation, it can clog up your catalytic converter with unburned hydrocarbons. Which makes your car smell like it farted all the way home.

ok, i have a 95 with 142,000 miles on it. the dealer even say's it was'nt really made to run on anything but 87 > so every once in awhile i put 93 octane in there just to kick it up a notch!!! bam!!! it really does'nt matter that much unless you upgrade your max to high performance parts. i.e. engine, trans, suspension, etc., and are you people rich??? who can afford 93 octane anyway?? i make pretty decent $$$$$$ and i can't afford 2.89 a gallon!!!

who's talking about low compression engines?
Resistance to detonation is a GOOD thing.

I run Mobil 93 all the time, and the regular verse premium debate is not so much about HP but more about MPG, my X had an M3 and we put regular in it, really performed the same but drank gas like an elephant, compare the cost of premium to 2-3 times that with regular and the savings is with premium but people see the 20cent savings and think before they even realize what they are actually doing
I've ran regular in the Maxima and with regular my MPG drops substantially, I do an entire week on a tank, regular I needed to fill up 2 days later.
It's about the MPG

I always try and use BP Ultimate 93 Octane but if that's not about I'll use regular 91 Octane - usually BP or Mobil.
In New Zealand the ratings are a bit bit different:
97 Octane = US 93
95 Octane = US 91
91 Octane = US 87
Stuff using 87 - can you say "BYE BYE KNOCK SENSORS?"

However, when it gets Steak and potatoes, my mpg is 29.1 hwy and 24.3 city. And boy is it responsive..... Premium all the way, that is the kind of performance I want, therefore that is all I will pay for...

Roughly 480km (c. 300miles) to the tank in the city and 680km (425 miles) out on the open road - though that's to when the orange petrol light comes on, not to when I'm conked out from no gas. My tank is the standard 65 or 68-Litre one. Considering I've got I/H/Full E it's pretty good consumption.
I started using high octane last November and have been taking notes on how much further I can go. But with 93 costing $1.55 NZD / Litre (about $4.10 USD / Gallon) it's still pricey. But passed emissions with flying colours! YAY!

i do want to say that i filled it up with 93 octane on monday and she's hummin like a kitty cat munchin down on cat nip. last night i was cruisin down 76 comin home from work and i was astounded at how much faster my coasting speed was. ( usaully is around 70 and was 80 to 85 ) and i was blastin so fast i had a hard time braking at times. i also flushed the transmission and put new fluid and conditioners in at the dealer yesterday and i think that made a world of difference.damn, i stand corrected!!!

I've tried premium a few times before and I always went right back to standard Mac and Cheese. I felt absolutely NO difference in performance and the price difference is not worth the microscopic gain in performance(if there even is any)... And like mentioned earlier, how do you TRUELY know that you are getting high octane fuel without testing it in labs and whatnot? There are a lot of scams going on out there, especially when it comes to money. For all you know that $3 a gallon gas you are buying is the same thing as Kraft Easy Mac.

Conoco/76 92 or Costco 92.
And thinking higher octane fuel makes you cruise faster.....dude what kinda of stupid crap is that? Makes the car perform better...but there isn't that noticeable different.

to all you know it alls, it does step up the perfomance when you put 93 in, and to the dude that said shift allready, i have an automatic, i hate sticks. my max is stock, and i'm keepin it that way........later
