allright im really new at this but i think i can post a question about gas in here i've used 87 and 94 sunoco and there is almost definetly no difference i heard that you can lose up to 15-20 horsepower because the engine changes the timing to make up for the low grade gas so the engine wont knock.

Interesting. I would also like to know this. I have spoken to many mechanics, and they say you don't really lose out on much, you only need higher octane if your engine is pinging. I wonder if that's really true...

Exxon / Mobil 93 octane

with higher octane I can get in it less and and have better throttle response, than with the cheap stuff. although $42 to fill up is no joke ...

I think people underestimate the importance of gas... why spend thousands on mod parts and then skimp out on the fuel you use to run the car. If you want to at least prolong the life of your engine - do what the FSM says. Use a premium fuel. Just because the car can compensate for low octane fuels doesn't mean that it's good for the engine. 94 octane is kind of high though.. that must be crazy expensive.

I'd also like to know about the top-tier gases.. I might switch to shell if there's any merit in that

Shell 93 (V-Power FTW; this stuff has been known to yield an increase from about 25mpg to 31mpg when used in conjunction with more moderate speeds. Usually moderating my speed will get me to 26-27mpg alone)
Sunoco 93
Mobil 93
BP(this is often Amoco fuel at the pump) 93

I think Sunoco, Shell, and Mobil are the top picks. I actually notice a little bit of a difference between equal octane BP and Sunoco fuels. maybe its the ethanol percentage?

I believe 91 is the highest octane here in Cali. Shell gas station.

Maybe I'll have to try that v-power stuff...

I've always had qualms about buying gas from Shell... since it's such a god-awful company... =/

Well since gas prices in Canada are like $1.05 - $1.15 per litre, I usually settle for Silver. :P

eh? any successful company could be called god-awful, it really depends on what you're reffering to. As far as the V-power goes, I try to get it as often as gas prices will allow and when im doing longer drives (mind you, longer drives for me is more than 3.5hours a day in the saddle) but so far every tank has had great performance and if i lay off the lead-foot, it has shown me increases in milage that miserly driving in my area alone will not accomplish

The Infinity's that use the same engine as the Maxima claim that you have to use premium so that they can boast lower emissions.

87 octane in the '90 Maxima.

Also, if you see the tanker filling the tanks avoid the gas station like the plague at that time. It kicks up all the **** at the bottom of the tanks underground and thus you're pumping it right in your gas tank. If you always buy gas from the same gas station, it might not be out of the question to ask the attendant when the tanks get filled so you don't get gas there that day.

93 shell only. Read somewhere that they use something in it that does something or the other to the performance/mileage. I'm not making sense.

I have a question:

I just got my Maxima really recently and was wondering what kind of octane fuel dealerships use when you buy a car. I would guess 87 because its cheaper for them.

Reason why I'm asking is that soon I'm going to start a 3 month test for my car to determine which is more economic for me (regular vs premium) and to see if I get better gas mileage using premium.

I start work Tuesday and its a decent majority highway commute. 80% highway to be specific.

But it's time to fill up my baby so I want to use the same fuel the dealership most likely used. I'm guessing 87.

Also, one more question, if anyone here has done gas mileage tests, which fuel do you get better gas mileage with and is the difference significant enough to buy premium? Thanks a bunch!!

Just because the dealer is too cheap to buy premium, doens't mean it's good for the car... and I'm not sure they wouldn't buy premium - the sales people fill up the car with a company card. If I were them, I'd put the best octane in that would max out performance and impress the customers. What to do they care if the dealership has to pay a bit more for gas?

At what Octane does the ECU retard timing? Also, does running mid grade really impact driveability that much?

when i first got my max i never looked into it and just put 87 cuz thats what i always used for my old car. but my last couple tanks have been 89 and i dont know if i should do 91 or higher cuz putting 87 never seemed to do anything bad. and performance isnt and issue for me, i just want it to run without breaking

the car can compensate for lower octane gas... but I debate where it's good for it or not.. just because you CAN run on a low low octane doesnt mean you should. Ultimately, you probably won't notice anything (except for performance) but it might cut down the engine life..

Regular

Gas is expensive in this day and age. I initially when first having purchased the car only put premium. Only recently when the gas prices started going up did I switch to regular. Premium is something I simply can't afford at this point in time.

Damn that George Bush

Been using regular ever since gas prices went over $2.50ish/gal. Really cant tell the difference. Im going to start putting premium in soon though because ill be able to afford it and will be driving longer distance to work.
