I believe the rating system is different in U.S. than in many other countries and that translates into higher numbers outside the U.S.

you may be on the money there Kenshi, but...you may not. After all you do drive on the wrong side of the road.
btw. Have any of you guys used the ethanol blend in your max. They are starting to promote it heavily down here but the results I got in my nissan truck were less than satisfactory. What are your experiences if any. Cheers.

Perhaps, but I believe you Ozzies use a rating systme called RON (Research Octane Number) and the U.S. uses AKI (Anti Knock Index) where 87 AKI would be 92 RON.

I recommend reading this FAQ at http://chemistry.about.com/gi/dynami.../gasoline.html and read section 6.13.

The only difference in each company's detergents is their formulation. Please refer to the paragraph in this link :http://chemistry.about.com/library/w...abyb100401.htm that states:

Regular Unleaded Gasoline

The recommended gasoline for most cars is regular 87 octane. One common misconception is that higher octane gasoline contains more cleaning additives than lower octane gas. All octane grades of all brands of gasoline contain engine cleaning detergent additives to protect against engine deposit build-up. In fact, using a gasoline with too high of an octane rating may cause damage to the emissions system.
I agree with you.

There are so many on this forum who actually think that their mpg's go up with super. The reality is they feel somehow that their cars are more important or valid if they use a more expensive gasoline. It would probably take a G35 with true duals for them to truly experience what they think they're experiencing with super in the Maxima.

I agree that up to 91 octane the Maxima has minimal gains. But as I said, I burned a lot of 93 out the tailpipe over the years, and now use stricty 87. No detriment, and my ego's not bruised in any way pumping 87.

I use 91 in my I30. I can't say that I tell a big difference between premium & regular, but thats what is recommended so I use it. I doubt there would be any noticeable gains using higher than 91.

Im a big person for running enough octane. However My 95 runs just as well on 89 as it does on 92. I dont have any knock data to back this up 100%. I do notice the car is a but more sluggish at wot on 87, so I put a stop to that after trying it a few times. If I were to ever do any serious mods Im sure Id step up, especially if knock was present. As of now the car is my comfy daily driver.

Well, my owner's manual recommends 91 and I don't really want to use anything less especially in very hot weather. In the wintertime I'm not as concerned. However, in the summertime, with different gasoline formulation and not wanting to have pre-detonation (knock), which is the worst abuse you can put on a piston, I want fuel with at least 91 octane.

The gas companies are pretty clever about what they sell though. You have to but a higher octane gas in your car than you really need. One way around it is to mix grades when fueling, but that means 2 transactions for an empty tank or fueling when half-empty and remembering what grade you last put in the car.

Nothing like Shell's V-power (93) for me. I've used Exxon/Mobil's, Lukoil, Sunoco and Amoco's premium and none have given me the performance like Shell.

As probably mentioned earlier, BMW, General Motors, Honda, and Toyota developed standards for their approval of detergent gasolines. The current brands that meet the standards are:

QuikTrip
Chevron
Conoco
Phillips
76
Shell
Entec Stations
MFA Oil Company
Kwik Trip/Kwik Star
The Somerset Refinery, Inc.
Chevron-Canada
Aloha Petroleum
Tri-Par Oil Company
Shell-Canada
Texaco
Petro-Canada

This link describes the criteria that all grades of their gasoline must meet.

I run 91 octane. Works fine. If I put something other cheaper grade in it. It always messes with my fuel sensor. Had to replace-

The ECU is maped to run 91 octane(research). Nissan does not run a duel map like the higher end cars, ie BMW, to run different octane ratings. There is no gain in running over 91 octane unless the ECU has been remapped. It's just like burning your cash. I run Chevron w/techron 91 oct.

Mobubble was the first detergent gasoline marketed before federal mandates.

I haven't seen an Amoco station in years. Didn't BP take them over? In any case all grades and brands have to pass the same tests.

Yes, they do. It's just that the two maps are for 91 vs. 87 octane...

Just noticed this response. One explanation is in this post: http://forums.maxima.org/showpost.ph...6&postcount=19

I know I've read more on this but I can't remember where. If I don't respond again, badger me by PM.

I just filled up my wifes Ford Escort with Shell 93 VPower. I know it's an Escort but I'm interested to see how it performs.

I've filled the Max up with Chevron 93 the past year. I've wondered how the Shell 93 would do in the max...
