'91 318is for a second ride?
Hey everyone,
I was on my way to the dealer this morning ready to get a '95 Maxima GXE 5-speed only to find out they had sold it on me only minutes earlier.
Oh well,
so I then was looking at a '91 BMW 318is
It handles great and had adequate power if it's revved.
I guess the thing that's stopping me is the lack of horsepower only 134 I think.
It had 137k on it and they
wanted ~ $4800
any thoughts, on power, reliablity, performance?
I ended up giving my wife my '92 Max,
because she needed it asap for her new job,
so I'm in a rush to find a new ride for myself.
If anyone wants to sell me any gen. 5 speed Max for under 6k let me know.

I wouldn't get it. I like the body style, but the four banger won't have enough power. For a little more you can get a 325i or is. They are fairly reliable, hey it is a BMW after all. and if you plan on modding it at all the aftermarket support is huge.

here's an idea...
You could get the 318is and then put the supercharger kit on it that's available for those cars. Hmm, I'm not sure which body style the '91 is - it might be the one that's 2 generations old (E36?? current is E46 and the previous 3-series was an E40 if memory serves)
Anyways, one of my Accord V6 brethren raced a 318 thinking it would be an easy win, but he got smoked by the 318!! As it turns out the guy had a supercharger kit in that sucker and could run with any of the Inline-6's if not beat them outright!!
That was pretty funny, and you could do the same.
Personally, I'd avoid old German cars. They tend to fall apart and repairs will be RIDICULOUSLY EXPENSIVE on them. I'd stick with Japanese cars if you're buying used. Plus most BMW's are driven very hard, or at least harder than most cars on average.
I'd stick with a Maxima.
