hey, i called up a local shop (Magic Brakes and Mufflers) and they told me $160 for a custom downpipe. i asked a few questions and it is mandrel bent and made of aluminized metal thing, not the best of qualities. im going to go ahead and try to get it done today. if anyone is interested, let me know and i can try to dyno for results.

y-pipe

If true, that's a damn good deal. I would ask what kind of bender they have. Mandrel benders start at about 100K and up.One of our producers spent 400K on the last one they bought. 99% of muffler shops dont have them. Alot of people who work at these shops don't even know what mandrel bending is. No flame intended here, just be sure you know what you are getting. Also, What kind of flex piece are they going to use? Lined flex pieces are not easily obtainable as Dallas and I have found. Good luck.

when i was talking to them, they said they use a mandrel bender and they do a number of projects for performance cars. they have been out for over 20 years and they a spread throughout houston. but unfortunately, he said that my pipe was too difficult to remake.

hey Dan 93 SE, how are the NMB y-pipes going? since this shop couldnt make one for me, im waiting for your new y-pipe to come out. you stated before that there were 10 in the making for the VQ. can i get a hold of one? let me know, thanks

Re: Re: y-pipe

DRU the pipes are complete and are on several cars with reports of excellent fit and a definite gain in power. Dave from Kansas City (4th Gen) will be dynoing his along with HOJO (3rd Gen)in the near future. As I posted earlier we are going a little slow here on purpose. We want to make sure that we have a good fit (so far fits like a glove) and that we can post dyno results that are independent. When ever we have posted in the past people would not believe us. If you MUST have one I would call Dallas at our toll free # and ask. We have been working hard at getting a good stash of the lined flex pipes, and on our NEW 304 SS tig welded version (still no butt welds). We appreciate your interest.

dan 93, how much do your NMB ypipes cost? are they made out of aluminized steel? i'm guessing that lined flex sections are quieter than the non lined versions.

WSP NMB pipes

We will sell them for under 200 + shipping. Dallas and I havent talked specifics except to decide under 200. Call him. 1-866-801-9338 Lined flex is better by far.

I wonder....

What would stop someone from buying the mandrel bends from JC whitney or some other header place and welding their own Y-Pipe?

The reason I ask is that I have done a similar thing for Project Secret Sauce, only with 14 ga. Alum.

y-pipes

Finding flanges are a pain in the butt. You can't buy them from Nissan. Also, the bends on the y-pipes are not stock 90 degree. We have them made, we don't use stock ones. If you use these you will have a pipe with many welds. Also, buy the time you mess around getting all the items needed, the pulling off old Y-pipe and welding up the new one. You are probably better off buying one from either us or Cattmen and using your time in a more constructive fasion.

Hey Dan

I got my new lined flex section and put it on this week. One question, it seems like it's really flexible. Have you guys ever seen the flex section expand and contract on itself? It's definately much quieter than my previous (but leaking) flex section.

But when the car runs at 1500-2000 rpms it seems like it shakes alot. It's definatly not hitting anything, it's got plenty of clearence everywhere. I looked under the car while it's being reved and I can see the flex section Expanding, and then when the gas is let go it contracts - it's like it's pulsing. If I hold my hand near the muffler and the engine is reved, I feel a blast of air, then no air at all, then a blast of air.

I was just wondering if this is what others have experienced with the flex section? Do you have any clue what's going on?

Thanks
